Are they for blogs? Yes, primarily. When you ping it automatically notifies certain types of sites of a new post (also includes search engines...).
Not sure how up-to-date my list will be Gillie, might be worth combining with the suggestions above.
Check out the requirements of each site being pinged before automatically adding to your lists folks.

These sites come and go G ;) Any list that has not been checked for three months is out of date. :D
I don't even bother piniging anything but the SE's these days...there's little point AFAIK, few people if any use anything else. That said I keep meaning to check to see if SU can be pinged.

Yep chatting to M the other day he more or less said the same thing, that there is only one worth pinging these days.
Also mentioned the taking of reference to wordpress in footers and headers so that it aint flagged up to hackers - he got if from someone else on here - can't rem who though! Memory is bad at the moment ...
