Hi
My website is hosted with 1&1 and I'd like to move it to other company(UK based).
Could you tell how to do it and how much is it to going cost ?
And what about a domain ? I also bought it from them.
Thanks

Well you need the source code to the website.
A website generally has a front end, and application layer and a database.
The front end being the one that generally exists.
So you need to make a copy of all the source code, and data, you should be doing this anyhow. Then ensure whoever you then host with can accept the same environment.
Again the front end is simpler, for the application well it can vary with the web server and OS. The database most RBDMS tend to be compatible at a simple level, but incompatible at a deeper level so may need to ensure the same one is being used.
As to the domain, well you need a DNS a record but they don't have to be at the same place, the DNS record can point anywhere so you just need control of it, and of course you can transfer it around though it takes a little time.

heart internet are UK based and I believe they are pretty good from the reviews I have received although you never know until you have problems and the people I have spoken to have never had any problems with them, which is good in itself.
The cost is all of course dependant on what hosting account you get with them.
How - it depends on the type of site you have, if it is a standard html site then it is just a case of ftping it down and then back up, it if is a scripted site then it may be a little more difficult. You would in most cases have to reinstall the script on the new server and download your sql database and resquirt it back upto the new server also ftp up any images etc that you have, making sure the file structure is the same. Lots of hosting companies actually offer a service of doing this for you for an hourly fee (from £35-65).
If your domain is with one and one they will give you the details to transfer it over upon request, you can transfer it top your new host or to a 3rd party account like UK reg and just point over the nameservers to your new host (information will be provided in your welcome email most likely), this will save you the trouble of transfering it all again should you want to switch hosts at a later date. Your webiste may also be down for a a couple of days is you are transfering your domain over as you have to wait fro it to be transfered before you can change nameservers in some instances.
You can cancel your one and one account at I think it is contract.oneandone.co.uk you will need your account number which will be on your invioces and also stated when you login to your control panel.
Hope this helps and good luck

Then you don't need to worry, your domain is safe :). If it is the painters website then it is html, the only problem you may have is with your flash gallery however it looks simple enough.

Well the trick is to get control of the domain first, and move that.
Move to a host where you can define the TTL (Time to Live), this is not 100% because a DNS caching can do what it likes, but if one does observe the TTL the setting the TTL low will improve the transition time.
You also want to have a period of crossover time so you can redirect traffic to the new site.
It is a bit of a dance but there is a critical path through this:
Get Hosting
Get New DNS record keeper
Domain DNS transfer
Hosting Transfer
Redirect to new Host
DNS to point to new Host
wait
Terminate First Hosting Location

Contact VidaHost (link in my sig) Im sure they will transfer the domain for you.
Also as the site was made with a Online Web Builder you need to make sure it can be transfered and still function. You will need to speak to your existing host for that :)

Most hosts will require you to download the code and database if required from your old hosting and upload to your new account using FTP usually, update nameservers etc.
Sometimes if customers ask REALLY nicely (usually UKBF members) we will go in a do the move for them included in the first year hosting price.

Don't get into marketing and promotional stuff, don't pay for anything that you can do it simply without risking anything and absolutly free of cost. My advice is to call any other domain name registrar ( i highly recommend godaddy - as i have got more then 200 domains registered with that company, available 24hours on telephone and email), ask them for a transfer domain service and they will guide you there and then and won't charge you a penny.
you can ask them to provide a link about transfering the domain from 1and1.co.uk and they will email you a short tutorial free of cost.
contact me if you need any other answers and i'll help you absolutely free of charge :)

We also help move customers sites, either using the WHM transfer tool or will manually move sites as it's really not that big a deal to move sites.
