Ok
The diffrence between the 2 domains are this
.co.uk are uk based companies
.com is an international domain
so it dosent really matter what you pick but i would buy the couk domain too so no1 else can
please let me know what you think
also what kind of site you looking for as i would recommend trustico for your ssl but remember yo dont need to have an ssl as this is only needed if you are doiung the transaction yourself etc.
But if you are looking for a good hoster you should try daily they are really good and the offer e shops
Lets us know how you get on

For SEO (Search engine optimisation) you are well advised if you are targeting a specific countries market to use a domain specific for that country (.co.uk in this example).
This should give your site slightly more authority in that country in SEO terms and certainly will make sure that the search engines properly list your site.
Run your site from the .co.uk and have the .com 301 redirect to your .co.uk domain.
I don't know what the other poster is talking about regarding SSL and hosting (Did you mention SSL or hosting in your Original Post?). In any case if you do need SSL or hosting we have some great offers with single root RapidSSL (Geotrust) at only £7.26 per year which is a lot cheaper than trustico and our hosting is equally good value.

The quick answer is yes. Even if you do not use it -nothing worse than if you have a successful site and some clown with the.co.uk starts a sex site using your name.
For £7.50 there is no arguement.

I'd advise having both if you can, with domain prices being so low these day's it makes sense. You could have both the .com and .co.uk for less than £20, you probably spend more on a round down the pub so it's worth protecting your brand if you can :)

.
I've used UKREG for domain names in the past and they sometimes have a get the .co.uk FREE if you buy .com.
In which case it does make no difference....get the two.
I would say to buy the both though....normally.

The search engines do indeed give better ranking in your own country if you have the co.uk. In fact if you search any phrase with 'uk' in it you'll see that they present mainly co.uk's to people in that country.
It is always better to have both as you may be confused with another site. The problem is those pesky charge's every year.
It is worth also mentioning that search engine ranking is not the be all and end all as effective online marketing depends on a lot more than just being in the number one position even on Google. I've had sites in the number one position for terms such as 'engagement rings' that have not done as well as sites that are not even listed but have more visits due to a more targeted 'FREE' marketing strategy and better PR.
I wish you well in your new venture :)
