The domain name I want is available however I don't really understand what I have to do. Its cheap enough to purchase for 2 years, but do I have to register it then with nominet??? and is there extra fees?
I havent got my website yet, but wanted to purchase the domain name to ensure it doesnt get snapped up.
Can some please clarify things please.

You purchase the name from a domain registration company. 123-reg.co.uk for example. They will pass on your details to Nominet. You don't have to pay or register separately with Nominet.
To log in to your Nominet account for the first time you need to go to https://secure.nominet.org.uk/auth/access-your-account.html and enter the same email address you used before with the domain registration company.
It can take a day or two for Nominet to receive your details from the other company though, in my experience.

buy it from 123reg , they are cheap and reliable for domain registration (crap at hosting though) so host elsewhere when the time comes.

As the others have said find a registrar to register your domain through should be less than £10 including VAT for 2 years. If you go to nominet directly its £80+vat.

Most domain registrants don't ever have to deal with Nominet and probably don't even know who they are. Your domain registrar will deal with registering, renewing, changing registrant details and name servers. If you register the domain directly with Nominet, its something like £80 +VAT. So as you see, Nominet want you to go through one of their members (registrars).
