I have a few "video nasties" of pests in unwanted places like people lofts etc.
These have been captured in what appears MP4 format. Now I'm not au fait with video editing but Windows movie maker wont even recognise this file type...
So couple of questions:
1.) Any recommendations for free video editing software as I need to edit the files
2.) Do I need to convert this MP4 file into something more universal before using it? (there appear to be lots of MP4 to other file fromats available).

Virtual dub will do it too (and it's variants NanDub and VDubmod)
All of them are free.

Right, I've had a go with the above and its way, way to advanced for me .
Cant even work out how to cut phases of video out yet (!!).
So back to the drawing board....any ideas for idiot proof video editing software for MP4 files ???
(I only need to 'cut' out the swathes where nothing is happening and join up the bits where there is some action)

i can put you in touch with someone that would do this for you for a reasonable fee. Might be the easiest solution tbh

Sony Vegas, like other high end editors is probably overkill and a steep learning curve.
maybe quickTime pro. Not free but only £20 ish.

Haven't used QT for years but it has a good reputation and is aimed at the consumer rather than the pro so I would think that it will do the trick.
