Losing loads of backlinks????

About 3-4 weeks ago I had about 32K backlinks going to my UK directory.

but recently I have been losing thousands by the week.

I have just done another check and I have now only got 7.5k backlinks.

My PR is still fine and the Alexa ranking (I know this isnt very good scale) keeps on going up.

Any ideas on what could be going on and why I am losing so many back links as i know that this will affect me in the long run?

(I am using Link Popularity Checker software to check my back links.)

According to a few link checkers I have the site has 3 to 6k of back links at the moment. Did you do anything in particular to built up your original collection of 35k of links? It could be that a particular source of your links has disappeared from the internet.

I did nothing at all, just submitted to a few more extra directories and that was it, as with my site I do ask for a reciprical link but that isnt mandatory.

the major losers where from "All the Web", "Alta Vista" and "Yahoo" i had according to them about 10K back links each. and now they are only showing about 1500 each.
