Don't bother. 99% of those directories will get so little traffic then they aren't worth the effort of registering.
Why do you want to get a listing in a directory? If it's to generate new business then choose a directory you can actually find using a search engine. If you are doing this to improve your ranking then it's almost a complete waste of time, there are far more effecive things you could be doing.

This site is a good resource http://www.vmoptions.com/directory-list.php like fisicx says it won't bring you business but may help with search engine rankings. You would be better off finding websites which have a simialr audience and asking the owner for an exchange. A decent link from a popular site can be worth literally hundreds from a directory.

...ike fisicx says it won't bring you business but may help with search engine rankings.
I thouight I had it the other way round: directories can bring in new business but are unlikely to help your ranking.
Assuming you want to make more money from your website concentrate on those activities that will make money. Directory submission is something you can do in your spare time but the research needed to make it effective will eat up the hours.

thought more links better listing on google ect, is it a case of quality not quantity?

@mcgovern - yes. For example... I have a client who has a link from ITV (which is as you can imagine a popular site). They fit bedrooms for 60 minute makeover. Not only do they get lots of relevant traffic but the link counts for a lot more than say a few hundred directories.

Yes!
Read this: http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2008/10/good-times-with-inbound-links.html
The author makes it clear that merit based links can affect your ranking but they are only 1 of over 200 ranking signals. That means there are at least 199 other things that affect your ranking.
An inbound link from 1000 spammy free for all directories is not going to help in the slighest but 1 inbound link from a trusted jewelery review site might be enough to push you up the ranking.

Absolutley agree with the above I would have reccomended yell.com however currently that has not done anything for me i have been advised to put something in kelly search but as the above members have said it is better to invest time in other methods of generating sales / leads

It's only the quality ones that are good, eg: specific verticals and portal sites. The 1000's of general directories won't give much in traffic nor SERPS ranking, bcos their devalued by Google - most are no more than link pages, and have little to no content to get spidered.
That's why Looksmart built 161 of them, bcos its the way forward now. Again, it's targeting - Showing the visitors to the related website..
and not wasting their journey, don't forget they want to find information fast, and not hang around too much, when they are making money themselves or planning something etc.
