Do any of you guys out there buy domain names for investments? :D

I buy domain names for ideas or projects that come up. If I havent used them I generally let them go.
I am not sure how much I agree with buying them for investment, ie knowing that someone wants a specific domain name and holding them to ransom. If someone wanted 'my' domain name, I guess I would want to make a profit... its a thin line.

The reason why I post this thread is because a few guys added me on twitter from across Europe and they are actually domain investors.
They say its a full time job for them!:D

I think 'domaining' is something that often attracts people with unrealistic expectations (to put it politely). Take what they say with a very big pinch of salt.
Here is a CLASSIC thread that spring to mind:

ps tried to reply to the thread to point out to the OP that he should have taken the £1.5K he was (supposedly) offered when he had the chance. :D
Unfortunately the thread now needs moderator approval to reply. :|

Thanks its that funny it should really be in "Time Out" rather than offers! At least then it wouldn't need moderator approval to bump it up!.

If you are interested in learning more about domaining, there is a forum dedicated to it: http://www.acorndomains.co.uk.
However, the point made above about how domainers have unrealistic expectations of value is very true.

Domain Names can be a good investment but like anything you need to do your homework and invest wisely. You will find it very difficult to make a living trading domain names nowadays whereas those who bought up generics in the past have made a healthy profit.
Owners seem to think their domains are worth £100k+ regardless of what it is imho. You need to think what is the use of the domain? Trifle.co.uk is good if you sell trifles but would you buy a trifle online? and if you did how many people search for trifle on google? whereas if you owned mortgage.co.uk that would be worth a lot of money.
Therefore I think good generic domains in the main extensions will rise in value with little risk. There has been loads of new extensions anounced but I doubt any will compete with .uk or .com
Actually it's a very bad idea so sell them to me! :-)

There are many people that do, but it's too much of a high risk to be honest, you never really know that they're going to make a return, there are so many alternative TLDs and names that people can use now it's unrealistic for an unskilled person to do it.
I have several domain names that I'm currently using as placeholders though.

I used to be into this business but I could never seem to get a good domain for a right price. The best I got was dining-room-furniture.com which I turned into an online shop. No sales to this day.

You need to do your homework but there is plenty of money to be made.
I just saw ovencleaning .co.uk on auction at £100 on www.domainlore.co.uk (http://www.domainlore.co.uk) which is a steal imho and renovations .co.uk for £360 which again i think is great value. I would buy myself but my phone is out of charge and you need sms message to register.
Oven cleaning is a franchise business so it has to be worth more than that to someone in the business. again renovations is big business and something people will type in.
You can also invest in domains which will get natural type in traffic which can earn you money. It's very hard to find decent ones for a good price but they are out there. Unfortunately there are big players who have been hoovering up for years.
