Do you think it's a good idea to give 100% control of URLs to customers in a CMS, or do you think they should be automated in some form:-

e.g. /category/product-name
or /id-product-name

Benefits:-
- Greater customer satisfaction
- Can tailor urls exactly as required

Negatives:-
- May lack SEO/common sense for naming urls
- May change a url once it's established (bad for seo)

Are there any other key things which customers would like/should be given 100% access to?

when you say customer - are you talking about running a hosted ecommerce system I take it?

If you can code something where people can code their own URLs then I say you should let them but with clear warnings about SEO etc and the ability to leave it to an already well SEO'd automatic URL system.
