Now this is intresting. Today it was announced that Windows 7 will not come with a pre installed browser.
This more or less means that when you install 7 you will then have to install a browser of your choice yourself.

The IT industry is getting more and more difficult everyday!:(

This is one of the anti monopoly things forced on MS.

Makes sense and IE is a bit of pain of a browser. MS crushed Netscape as a business, when it suddenly realised that the web was the next big thing, and it did by leveraging off their OS base, which is monopolistic practice.

I am sure a lot of people will install IE, but at least it gives the other browsers a shot, and MS may just make IE more compliant perhaps use some of the open technologies and protocols and we can start to make the web a bit more interesting.

This is excellent news :D

However, I doubt it will lend much of a hand to the fall of IE as people will just download it if they don't know any better.

A lot of people will probably be left marooned. How are they going to download a browser without a browser on the system?

It is an interesting point, perhaps it will be supplied on a CD or the recovery disk, and the OEM or Builder will be able to add other browsers.

Brilliant! However I agree it will proberly just be downloaded.

I hate IE I cant understand why year after year they bring out a new version thats just as unfriendly as the last. Why cant they just bring one out that functions like pretty much ALL the others.

I find myself creating web pages for Safari/Firefox/Oprea fairly pain free and then just hacking around getting rather frustrated getting the same pages to look right in IE.....I wish they would give up and pass it on to a decent browser or come up with a browser that functions as it should...... Rant over...

Bet it'll just be on a bundled CD.

From:

http://www.europeanvoice.com/article/2009/06/new-microsoft-system-will-not-come-with-web-browser/65177.aspx

Microsoft announced yesterday that IE will be offered "separately and on an easy-to-install basis to both computer manufacturers and users" when Windows 7 is launched in Europe in October, rather than as pre-installed software. It said that "computer manufactures will be able to add any browser they want to their Windows 7 machines, including Internet Explorer"

In others words all OEM installs [i.e most consumer purchases] are likely to have IE preconfigured.

To be honest I think it's a bit of a ridiculous situation in 2009 some 10 years after the IE vs Netscape wars. Other operating systems come with a presinstalled browser so it seems a bit hypocritical to force Microsoft to drop it. As others have implied how is the average Joe going to download and install a browser without another one to do it with.

Dotty

Does windows still come with Telnet?

They are a telnet, domain name, and GET away :)

The OEMs may rise to this and install a couple of browsers, but generally they want to be paid for extra software installs, so maybe Opera will rise to this, it is a nice browser.

Browser makers get their cash from Cert Orgs, and Searchbars in the main, who knows Dell could put Firefox on, they would be happy not having to tow the MS line themselves in that balance of power.

Of course it ships with Telnet, even a command line FTP client. :D

Surprised you haven't mentioned Lynx yet. :p
