I understand the importance of demographics when setting up a business, of picking your area carefully, knowing your target audience inside out etc

So.....

if I look at established businesses in the same field I can glean a lot of the information from them rather than starting totally from scratch

ie lots of event organising companies for singles (or whatever) in Bristol, Brighton and Leeds etc so I can assume that demographically these are the good areas to choose without paying a specialist company to charge me a large fee to tell me that.

Same goes for all aspects of business from design of website to appeal to certain age ranges and strata of society etc..

I've been told I must do all my researching from scratch but just seems a bit silly when others have gone there before me.

What do you think?

I'd just spy on others doing the same :D We did that before we got this shop and the shop before, we even took note pads and wrote prices down to work our own out from. Just spy on the areas you will be covering, to say Leeds and London will be different I would think (we're not as posh up here you see  )

Research is just another word for spying. Just do the James Bond thing :D

That's exactly my line of thinking Jayne - must be our northern roots! :)

Well, ok, I confess I originate from Stoke On Trent so more of a Midlander but still NORTH!! of Watford!!

Always assuming of course that they got it right as well.

You wouldn't want to duplicate someone else's stupidity.

Just because they have a slick looking shop, business card, fliers, website, doesn't mean they're successful and that they've gotten into their customer's headspace.

That's why you spy on them all :D The idea is to make yours better than the others. Women are much better at the spying thing, i'd have thought you men would know this :D
