In January of this year we signed up to use Purple Paw web hosting as it was a reasonably-priced package featuring many of the tools we required. Unfortunately, we've had a whole barrage of problems with them - I URGE YOU NOT TO USE THEM!!!!

They insist that the amount of downtime we've had on our server is normal but I've reported problems on the following dates, and I'm sure you'll agree this amount of outage is unacceptable:
21 Feb
20 Apr
23 May
19 May
22 May
31 May
12 July
1 Aug
14 Sept

This is not simply servers being unavailable, these outages were at least 3 hours each time!!!

Consider www.purple-paw.com well & truly named & shamed!

So why are you still with them? Are you tied to a contract?

Yup - they won't refund our fee, they won't respond to phonecalls or emails & we're stuck with them until January.

Having said that I'm now so irritated by the disruption I'm happy to pay another company to take the hosting over, because this amount of hassle is the last thing I need! It's not that we can't function as we have webmail etc but it takes twice as long & my tracking software doesn't work on webmail! (we count the number of emails we send out to our clients).

I have found www.oneandone.co.uk to be the best value for money & customer service is very good.

I also use 1and1 and agree they are great value. I have also found their customer service and tech support excellent.

One and one don't have phpmyadmin installed which is a serious downer for anyone with a php/mysql application - they can still run with a few tweaks - but mysql is handled differently.

But yes they are pretty cheap if thats what you want.

I'd not reccomend 1&1 due to experiences with them in the past.

It's hard to find a balance between a small one man band with servers that fall over and a big company with good uptime and poor customer service.

Use http://www.matrixxhosting.com/ Small company, good service, reasonably priced (if you want cheap this isn't it) a regular on the forums.

Thanks Duane - if anyone contacts me from UKBF I'll try my best to give the best priced deal without jeopardising customer service levels (which are high) - 0871 218 0507

UKBF members will get a better deal than on our site ;)
