Hi,

I'm wanting to know if anyone on here suffers from dyslexia. And which colour backrounds do you find easier to read from. And, do you think others have allowed for this on web sites, people think this condition is funny, I do not. I want to make sure my site will be easy to read for everyone. You can PM me if you don't want to tell the others on here.

Thanks

Jayne

Hi Jayne,

Unfortunately a number of web sites don't take into account accessibility considerations which can make it difficult for sufferers of various disabilities to read.

You might find this link of some use - I bookmarked it a while ago which has some advice on web design that takes account of dyslexic readers.

There's a range of other web sites out there with guides for making your site accessible.

Hope this is of some help.

Did anyone watch the TV prog on dyslexia the other night? It said that new research done over the last 10 -15 years states that people can't be divided into the two categories of a) bright people (ie high IQs) who cannot spell/read properly and b) not so bright people with same problem who were previously classed as 'having difficulty in learning to spell/read'. They all come under the same category, and are either all 'dyslexic' or all 'having difficulty'. The part of the brain involved is identical.

One of the reasons for it is identified as lack of oral communication/stimulation in very young childhood (ie up to 2 years old) by the parents - for example, not reading bedtime stories or talking meaningfully to their children much. Children grow up not being able to identify sounds properly, which manifests as incorrect spelling & ability to read.

In other words, the vast quantities of money spent in British schools for 'children with learning disabilities' - dyslexics - should be spent on all children who have problems with reading & writing!

All rubbish,

My Mother told me I could talk for england by the time I was 3 yrs old, bright for my age. My sister had to go for speach help at 5 yrs old and my Mother spent hours with her reading etc. Yet I am the worse speller in the word and have problems and my sister is teaching at the local school, her daughter has just got through to the national spelling compertion semi final. Yet I still passed all my exams, even with my spelling problem. It doesn't matter how you are brought up, I think you are born with these problems.

We were talking about dyslexia, not how stupid you can be.

All rubbish

OK. Almost all dyslexic assns had this knee jerk reaction too about the programme.

I'm not sure you've read what I said in my post. The programme was not 'getting at' dyslexics, but at the way the problem has been handled.

It wasn't you I was aiming at, but the program. The TV seem to put everyone in little boxes, but everyone is different. :D

You could make your website so that people with dyslexia who prefer to view websites with their own background colour can do so.

Do not force them to look at your website in one way only and make sure there is good contrast with the background and text colour.

Making your website easy for people with disabilities also leads to it being easier for everyone to use and better for search engines.

I think you have made a really vaid point there Jayne and tbh its not something that even occurred to me when setting up my site.

I've also been thinking about talking sites, maybe a future thought, would help people with bad eye sight too.
