If you had 5k to invest what would you do with it?

Invest it ither in my own business (additional budget for marketing/PR of www.kashflow.co.uk)

or buy a chunk of one of a number of small companies I know of and believe I can add something to besides just cash.

Probably use it for setting up co-lo servers for the hosting biz.

Either that or spend it as a down payment on a new Ford Focus ;)

colo actually isn't any more expensive than leased. We thought it would be but decided to do it anyway. The monthly payments to Dell (0% credit) and to the data centre add up to the same as the leased server charges. Once the servers are paid off we'll be saving money but still providing an improved service (our leased servers were in the US, I see yours are already UK) Plus there are other tax benefits to doing things this way. Look into it, hopefully you'll be as pleasently surprised as I was.

I don't want to hijack this thread so if you need more info please PM me or start a new thread.

Dave - What was it Alan Sugar said? Oh thats right, he's writen books on marketing, cheque books!

5k on shares in Tesco or Sainsbury could be a good long term investment!

What would you invest 5k in TechFox?

First I'd head straight to KFC :)

Then I'd find an asset that would appreciate and provide me with a small income too :)

I would spend it on drugs, for a fast, effective, short term gain!!! No only joking! It would have to be marketing as well i'm afraid.

Are you giving the 5k away for the most original answer techfox?????

You and your campervan Jayne ;)

I would probably spend it either on marketing my own business, or a good painting (personal assett). Something that would gain value over a number of years. This is actually rather hyperthetical, because technically I do have that amount spare but I leave it sat in the bank in a run of the mill current account when I should move it to an ISA/High Interest or similar account - or actually buy the painting I mention above!

If you had 5k to invest what would you do with it?My wage slave job precludes me from holding directorships in other companies (unless I jump through lots of hoops, agree to all sorts of restrictions, and fill in way too much paperwork that has to demonstrate that it in no way competes with my employer) so I act as an investor in, and advisor to, a number of small businesses.

Each spare 5K I use as either a top up investment for an agreed initiative or as a new investment opportunity. Spreading the risk is key. I much prefer this approach to investing in the stock market, riskier but more personal and more interesting. My most common top up investments are for equipment and for promotion. I have some security with equipment but promotion is always tricky.

The only exception is my interests in my wife's business. I avoid investing directly as I would try to tell her what to do too much. Martial harmony is more important to me. I do give her help and advice when asked and have created (badly) and maintain (rarely) her website myself.
