Hi,

When I set up my new business on the web, if I had a links page, do I charge people to put links on, or is it polite to do this for free. I'm a little unsure about web etiquette.

Thank You

Jayne

It depends on your site :D

Some sites with high google page ranks charge for links, but not many would be prepared to pay for links on a low page rank site.

The Google page rank algorithm is "secret" to stop people making sites that are useless but rank highly, the best way to describe it is "Googles measure of your sites importance"

You can see various sites pageranks by installing the Google tool bar.

Some sites need to work harder to get a higher page rank than others. With our hosting companies we are really concerned about search engines as we are growing at a nice rate from word of mouth and the advertising we do.

It's good to have a links page of websites that might be helpful to your visitors (not competitors).

As for charging - there are really no rules. If you have enough good quality traffic to your website - people might pay to advertise.

On mine I dont pay to add links to a link section, however, I have sponsors that have their banners displayed on a rotational basis that do pay.

Hi Jayne,

I'd suggest you just link to sites that are of genuine interest and use to vistors to your site and do it for free.

You have a huge dollop of common sense (I spent a few hours changing my site because of a common sense comment you made in another thread - damn you!). Theres not much that's complicated about how you structure your new site and deal with stuff like links. Just take the common sense approach and you'll do fine.

Thank You for that....I'm sorry I caused you lots of work, i'll keep my mouth shut in future  (not)

I wouldn't put any old link on my site, only the ones that would really help my customers! I will not charge for links now I know. I am full of common sence, just brains i'm lacking

That's great! :D but I think I would word it less business like, so people like me could understand what they were offering :D

Eg. An accountant is someone to do your books and end of year accounts, he will sort all your tax things out and make your life easier :D
