I urgently need to know: what is the average duration of the working week - 38 or 48 hours?

I think it is 37.5 which is set by Europian legislation.

Have had a quick look and it gives the max working week but didnt read far enough to see if it gave the guidelines for a standard working week.

A standard office week is between 35 and 40 hours per week, being 7 or 8 hours per day, five days a week. Retail and Industry could both be higher.
