Just checked our ranking and for the first time in over 12 months the SERP's results have changed.
When did the update happen? And if a while ago is it now stable?

Last three weeks or so have been a bit mental, it seems to have settled down in our categories.

SERPs are updated all the time. The old days when Google updated once a month are long and it's now a continual thing with occasional major upheavals when they do something significant to the ranking algorythmn.
This is why blogs and news sites tend to rank well, their content is new and fresh and often gets indexed and ranked within hours of publication.

Ahhh but.....this is a change in the SERP's we've held the #1 spot for the terms that I'm looking at for about 18 months. Now down to #3. Time to do some digging.

I think its to do with google devaluing spammy links, that's the nod i've been given anyway.

Its quite likely to be what the 2 sites above you have done.
One always has to keep ones eye on the ball as you never know when a googly is coming.:)
Hence why I check rankings every day.

Yup it probably is. I'll do some digging tonight and try to see what they have done.

SERPS are updated all the time. For millions of keywords every day. Sometimes many more times.
The top 5 results do tend to have more consistency in some searches, but they really do change on a daily basis. Check out the image here that shows this: http://www.ip-seo.com/seo-services/seo-analytics/tools/
Also Google looks at 250 different elements, it's not just links.

:eek:You saying I've got spammy links?:eek::p
Well the results are fluctuating on a daily basis. The SERP's have gone from being rock solid for 18 months to yo-yoing around. There have not been any changes to any of the pages, so I guess it’s leave matters alone and see what happens over the next few weeks?

My car has broken down,so I think I will sit by the roadside and wait for it to get better.
One must be proactive WTF is that.?
As opposed to unproactive.( don't anyone speak English no more.?)
Investigate your opposition as to why they rank higher than you.
Then your in a position to put some sugar in there tank.

We went up and down for about 2 weeks on the big competitive single word term that we're not highly ranked for., all the way up to position 11, one day, and then completely unranked on top 10 pages the next, and everywhere in between.
We are now sitting 2 positions higher than we were before it all started. I'd sit it out for a couple of weeks before making any drastic changes.

About 3 weeks ago, google had a major shift in the algo, it appears to be with links, being devalued.
The problem is that imagine a top site gets put on the 'does not pass PR' list (it happens all the time), that has an affect across the web, as the loss of PR propagates across the link web from that site, all the sites losing PR and the associated link juice.
OK now imagine that google, having seen positive results in their test, decide that rather than fight hand to hand, they will introduce this change into their main algorithm. BOOM. Pr across the web is altered, propagating from site to site causing that site to bounce around in the serps like billy ho, until, finally when the wave has propagated across the web, it settles.
Looks like that is what happened

We have been observing some change in Google SERPs too. Though, as fisicx rightly said, SERPs are updated all the time, we did observe a big overhaul in first week of April. Incidentally, its the same time when Page Ranks were updated.
