The instructions say to post an introduction, so here goes:
I'm the man behind DreamGenius Ltd, Alan. I've been running my company part time since the beginning of last year, when I set up because I'd been made redundant.
I found work again much more quickly than I imagined but decided to keep the company open as insurance. Now that my present employer has been bought out, I'm thinking I might need to claim on that insurance.
DreamGenius Ltd exists to provided support, training and service to small business and home workers - people who'd rather be using their computers to earn money than wasting valuable time getting them to work.
Well, that's me - and I'm here to learn about running a small business without having to make all the mistakes myself.

Have a look at my web site - it's still very much a work in progress but it's better than me trying to post it all here.
In essence, I work with the customer to provide the solution to their computer problem, being internet access, web hosting, web design, trouble shooting, network design, etc.
In my target market, I don't believe there's an out of the box solution for these people. It requires dialogue and trust.

Hi Alan,
Welcome to UKBF - the area you've chosen to work in is pretty exciting at the moment - lots of people needing help - I wish you all the best in growing the business.
If theres anything you need help with that you can't find using the search option then post a question - theres usually a few people who can help pretty quickly.
Maybe you'll pick up some new customers too!
I look forward to chatting with you around the forums,
Rob

Hi Alan and welcome to the forums.
It must be difficult to attempt to build a business and work full time. The change of ownership of the company does not neccessarily mean that you will lose your job again and can often be a beneficial change (As have many that I have been involved in). That said your insurance policy may still be difficult to build.
I wish you luck whichever way things go.

If you can get the work to keep you going fixing pc's for people and showing them how to get themworking properly seems a great way to earn a living.
Having done it in the UK for a career my brother in law has just emigrated to france and is setting up a business over there doing the same thing.
Do you currently have to turn work away because of your full time career? The answer to that question should give you a good indication of how good your insurance is.
Best of luck and welcome aboard!
Russ

Yes, it is tough building a business around a job but building a successful business is painful, either in money or time. The only way to avoid these is to start with the money upfront and not as a loan - not the boat I find myself in!
There is undoubtedly a silver lining to the cloud of integration with the new owners but, having been there, do I want to live through it again? That's the question I have to answer just now.
Russ
Yes, I am having to turn work away or at least manage expectations. The challenge is, once you've turned someone away, they rarely knock on your door again. It's a very fine line.
Thanks to all for the support and welcome.
Alan - Yes, another one :D

Welcome. Small businesses will always need help with computers so here's to a growing successful business.
BTW, how did Matrixx know you were called Alan?
Finally, we can recommend a remote support tool which enables you to troubleshoot problems from your own office - obviously s/w problems.
Send me a PM if you want to know more.
