View Full Version : Credit Card payment face to face online
Is it possible to take a credit card payment face to face with a virtual terminal? Does this go against their terms? If you know of any other ways of taking a payment using a card face to face but over the internet and not a CC machine, please let me know.
Cheers :)

go get some sleep!
i'm not sure how this would work for what you are talking about but i've been reading Mark's blog Iddictive (thankyou!) and there was a post about a personal credit card reader for safer shopping online so you just swiped the card and didnt have to enter your details which was safer and other stuff.
I was speaking to the guy who developed it and they have got it to work and signed up quite a few businesses in North America that use it, swipe the customers card and it takes the payment on Paypal or a similar gateway. They are currently working to develop it and further it to be used as a device with more payment gateway/providers and also finish a new unit allowing chip and pin for UK/Europe and to be ahead when the USA changes so it might be worth having a look / chat with them to see if they can do something.

I like the fact its a one off payment for the unit and it plugs into a payment provider you already will have and can keep the money and fees all in the same area. :)

Paypal (and I presume others) offer a virtual terminal for this sort of thing.
What value p/m or p/a do you expect to process? Combined online/offline/phone.
Thanks both
Burden - a bit of a late post I know mate ;) that's potentially an idea ... The problem I'm thinking though is I'm not sure if Paypal is suitable for face to face transactions.
Movietub - thanks as said above, does the virtual terminal work for card holder present? It would be in an application, so each user would have different values.
Cheers

It works in the same way as an over the ohone tranx, you type in their details and it processes the payment. Same as typing details into a card machine over the phone.
I don't understand what you mean by built into an application? If it's an application taking payment then why would the cardholder be present?
Unless this is some sort of ternminal a person uses and then makes payment, in which case again a normal card reader can take an instruction feed from suitably written software. Like in a resturant where the till transmits the total to the card machine.
I think you need to be more clear about what you are trying to achieve!
Thanks and sorry for not making it clear ...
Basically, imagine it's an online till (it's not but just imagine) ... people would sign up to use the online software, and they would be using this in a store say. Someone would come to the counter and then pay for goods face to face ... obviously the till software is online and then a credit card payment would need to be taken. How's best to do this? Either a terminal would need to link into the online software or use a virtual terminal, but I thought the card holder is not present when using a virtual terminal, so it might go against their terms of service.
Cheers :)
On second thoughts, it looks like a card terminal would work, but not sure how they integrate into a computer system.
Anyone know how?
Cheers
