I am looking at starting a new business and today spotted small shop in a good location with lots of passing custom next to a train station in south london.

The actual shop used to be a florist shop, there is not one in the area - so seems strange that its closed??

Anyway, I am posting here to see what ideas you have for this shop / venue?

It is based in south london in a so so area, not lots of money but ok.

There is a news agents across the road and its sandwiched between a very cheap Aldi supermarket and a solicitors, then a TSB Bank

Across the road is a news agents, estate agents, nice cafe and a ethnic funature shop

So ANY IDEAS?

Mark

I think for it to do well it would have to sell a product that would appeal to the traveling customers mostly too and from work....

I have an interest in business, but no particular product or business type.

So trying to think of what could do well in such a location

Mark,

I seems to me that you are putting the cart before the horse. You need to know and to understand the specifics of your business venture before looking for property to support it. Asking us for ideas reveals that you haven't yet done that.

Maybe this store will be the ideal vehicle for launching a business, but you'd better know the industry, have a strategy, know the competition, understand the investment, estimate your cash flow needs, etc., before making any decisions about property.

I admire the enthusiasm you have displayed in this and in other posts; however, you need to apply some business discipline too.

Hhhmm how about selling something in the food and drinks category. Start your own bagel cafe. Well that's the only thing time-frugal commuters need.

Mark - you have spotted an opportunity :)

My gut feeling is a coffee and sandwich/bagel/baguette take-away sort of place

Of course not knowing the exact location etc it's hard to say.

These places are quite labour intensive though but I remember you used to run a bistro? So it'll probably be a doddle for you :)

It's not it Streatham is it??

I used to know a florist who did very well for himself so maybe try and find out why the florist closed.

Alternatively, cafes do very well but you'd be competing with an already established venture and you'd need to get an A3 licence.

Maybe you could you try and provide something that the cafe over the road were not... such as early morning sandwiches for commuters or mocha choca light tall cappa frappa chinos?! :?
