i am currently working part-time and was thinking of starting a catering van business would i have to register as self employed or would i put it down as a second job regarding tax credit and just give them my income every year

You have to tell the tax office that you also have some self employment.

Getting the tax return to do every year seems a bit daunting at first but you get used to it and there are certain cost benefits.

Funnily enough I happened to notice that there is a burger van being offered for sale in the village close to me. I think they want about £2k for it. I thought about buying it but I dont have any time to run it :)

Definately - you don;t just have to do burgers - we had a guy arrive on our business park who does burgers, breakfast baps, salads (plated) sandwiches etc so the health concious can eat too! We did a rough tally of his customers between 11am and 1pm on a weekday and at an average of £2.00 a burger/sanwich worked out that he took around £400 in 2 hours....and it was a constant streatm from 1 - 3, then the schoolkids arrived from 3 - 4 - the went home at 4.30....we reckon he must do at least £1000 a day!
