Could anyone please explain what a Link Farm is or rather how a site would be classified as one?

I have joined LinkMetro and received 4 requests for links over the last couple of days, but the sites requesting seem to be just a little information with A LOT of links, not necessarily relevant to the content of the site.

The little information I have learnt relating to this subject makes me feel that these would not necessarily be good links to associate with my site.

Any help appreciated.

Kate.

As soon as you go from managing a few links in your own back garden to a large field full of links, you are into link farming.

It is about volume and relevancy. If you have a lot of links out of your site that do not really relate to or compliment your products and services then you could be seen to be running a link farm.

Mostly, link farms have no content though other than the links. Some link farms specialise in certain areas (anything to do with motorcars for example) and perhaps have a forum or other content.

The larger link farms will use database and link management technology.

You are going to have to go some way before you can accused of being a link farm.

The downside of link farms is that the search engines do not look on such sites that kindly (they are, after all, effectively competing).

These particular sites have a big of information and content, but then a disproportionate amount on unrelated links. What confused me, is that they have a PR4 or PR5.

I suppose link farms completely not working, it is a wasting of time. Moreover you could be excluded from the seach of google.
