Hello all
I'm looking for a new laptop and I'm not really sure which make to go for. My basic requirements are minimum 512RAM and 50gb hard drive. I'm not really fussed about the hard drive but bigger is always preferable. The key is performance as I will be running Visual Studio and Photoshop. I would also prefer to keep the cost under £1k.
The only other stipulation is that I won't buy a Dell machine.
Can anyone offer any advice?
Thank you
Sarah

Hi Sarah
We should be able to source something like that for you! I have a range of ex corp laptops in stock and i can quite happily install a larger HDD for you and it will not come anywhere near £1000!
Are you a LTD company at present? we also do leasing to LTD co's and it is all tax deductable
Drop me an email or PM if you would like to discuss
contact no is 08702 24 25 38 and is 24/7 if you would prefer to speak
Kind Regards

As a matter of interest, why won't you buy a machine from Dell? They are among the best.

Hi
Dave - I was looking for a new one preferably, but if you have a website I can look at then please send me your URL.
Steve - My last laptop was a Dell and the overall experience has put me off for life.
Thanks

hi sarah
we do not yet have a site for the laptops ( a work in progress) as our main focus has been on the local leasing side of things.
I am currently on a contract at the moment but i can send over some pictures shortly!
I understand the requirement for new, we can source these but it is not our target market. leave it with me though. Is your preference for an outright purchase?

sarah
just out of interest
do you guys have the ability to pull existing domains into your hosting and manage them? currently have 2 domains .co.uk and .com
the A records for them are pointing to another DNS server, however i would still like to be able to view the control panel for the domain which i cannot do currently
do you have any sort of solution for this? may also be interested in some site design in the future as i like the layout and feel of your site
let me know about the hosting just now though!

I've been looking at Dell (inspiron 1200) recently as something cheap and cheerful that'll do what I need.
The catalogue price: 399E
Website price (frontpage): 429E
Website price (info page): 449E
Website ("click here for up-to-date price"): 469E
That's still without tax :(
Still, probably the cheapest new one I can get that could run PS and various server software.

I'm using a Dell, and also have a Toshiba. I'd say the Toshiba was everything of what you'd said about the Dell. I'd never have another, switches off, low battery life, poor software setup, need I go on ?.
Dell machines (at the moment) are pretty fecking reliable, I've been using mine for over 18 months now and it's never let me down.

Hello all
Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking of maybe a HP or Compaq. Does anyone have any recent experience of these makes?
Thanks

Compaq is now HP anyway, but I used to work for both companies and the HP are pretty solid. I had an Omnibook whilst I worked there and I found the quality a lot better than Dell, but Dell have improved.

Personally I would almost always recommend HP for business purposes, though it does depend on which range. I would avoid the consumer range, preferring something like the NC range.
The biggest difference is often the level of support. I have appalling experience of Acer's support, acceptable but time consuming experience of Dell, and excellent experience of HP. Hence my preference for HP, but do you have to pay for it I'm afraid.
Hope this helps!

I second that!
In my experience Dell aren't what they were, Compaq/HP are only middling quality and IBM are too damn expensive!
( by the way I have no business interest in any of these machines - I just use the things as an average (semi) illiterate PC user...

What do people think about ASUS laptops? I've been looking at a few and they seem like a good buy.
From experience though - I'd recommend Sony VAIO, and Toshiba seem to be doing well in the laptop market these days!

I must say that I think the Sony Vaio are massively over priced (but then again so are all sony products)
My employers use dell desktops but exclusively compaq laptops - our IT division recently reviewed all the options and compaq came out top again (though of cause that also considers price/ compatability to our networks etc)
I have recently bought myself a laptop for home and work useage (Fujitsu-Siemens) and so far it is great. Bought it from laptopsdirect.co.uk which whilst I didnt like the sound of the company originally (call it gut instinct) were actually very good and very competitvely priced.

My 2 pence (haveing used laptops for many years)
Dell - V Good - My business partner uses a D600 and its a very nice machine. I've used to use one to the point it fell apart after much abuse (even then I gave it to a freind and and it's still going strong as her desk top machine)
My main laptop is a IBM 600x - rather old, Titianum case, the best laptop I've ever owned (you can pick up for around £200 on ebay)
My wife has a Acer, very heavy but a good machine with built in wifi.
