Impossible to answer the question. The costs are so varied that there isn't a worthwhile average.

Some will spend £100 a month, some will spend £10,000,000.

 I can't think of one company speading that amount on advertising PCM.

The old rule of thumb was 10%. However, things have changed thanks to the Internet and I have no idea these days what the average % is.

OK, well it may be helpful if you post how much your company spends on it (if you don't mind divulging this information).

We are budgeting with £ 500 a month this year for paid advertising.

On top of that we do as much free advertising and promotion as possible such as updating our blog on a regular basis and contributing to forums like this!

Coca Cola probably spend much more then £10m a month.

Cadbury's
General Motors
Mcdonalds

Etc.

My point is that businesses vary so much there is no average spend. So far I've spent about £30 on any form of marketing since 2007 but I know how to work the free forms of promotion. Some businesses may spend a few thousands but that's because it's the most effective way to bring customers in (it's all about ROI).

We spend a little. Our main advertising is through SEO (surprisingly, since thats what we do).

Now we have forked out our little amount, we dont really need to put much more into it, just mainain our positions, as we are now on the first page of Google for some really good keywords.

If you spend more than £300 per month, then I would recommend looking at SEO. Not only will it bring you business, but it is an investment in to your website too.
