View Full Version : The Great UKBF Link Exchange

Hello Everyone,
I've had a thought whilst writing my newsletter this month. I don't do it too often as it hurst too much, but I was thinking about search engine optimisation, and the most important aspect being link building.
It goes like this...
For the first time ever my newsletter readership has now broken the 10,000 readership number with the help of the forum members, and of those 10,000 at least 90% of you will have a website. Every single one of you who has a website will want it to rank highly in the likes of Google and MSN...and the best way to achieve that is through what is known as your link popularity.
So my theory is simple...
If you want to take part post your message to this thread giving your website address, what you want the link text (anchor text) to be, and a brief one or two sentence description for your website.
If someone reads your post and wishes to exchange links with you they add your link to their own website, and then PM you telling you they have done it and asks you to return the favour.
Rules...
This will work best if we all take part... I want to see thousands of replies to this thread.
Secondly, if you are going to take part then keep your side of the bargain. This will only be as successful as those who take part.
No links to porn, "get rich quick" or other rubbish, this is meant for genuine businesses. The moderators will delete inappropiate posts here.
Big hint... as much as your may not believe this but exchanging links with your competitors will help the both of your out no end :) Its all about relevance.
(edit)
I've had a couple of PMs asking what Anchor Text is, so its basically this...
If you look at my signature below you will see the links to my websites are not labelled as the company names, but instead labelled as the keywords for my services. This tells the search engines what the websites the link goes to are related to, and basically the theory behind it is that it will help my websites rank higher for those keywords.

Ok, now I'll start us all off.

Are you better to put links on your home page?
Are image links(with alt tag) worse than text?
Thanks Chris.

By the way responding to Epiphany's comment about only exchanging links with a PR3 or above site.... remember that a PR1 site will become a PR5,6,7 site over time if the owner of the website is active enough to work on it...get in their early and exchange links with them before that website owner starts becoming picky on who they will exchange links with!

I am happy to join this on behalf of LAM Design (http://www.lamdesign.co.uk).
We are are a couture dressmaker and tailor. Links likely to be of interest to our customer base, preferably related to fashion/weddings/etc., are welcome providing they do not compete directly with us (of course) and are "tasteful" - so no porn links (worthy as they may be). I do not believe that technical services (web hosting and the like) would be appropropriate.
There is a full links management system (http://www.lamdesign.co.uk/links/) in use on our site so you can post your link informaiton directly. If there is no suitable category, you can suggest one.
Our link information follows below:

Amazing how far one will go to promote one's own business :-) Sorry about that.
You missed the note on my post: "[Note. There is a bug in the links management system that means you can only post a new link from the root level although you can specify a category.] " LAM Design and the forum use different link management solutions. Fill in the form without going into one of the categories first. You select the category for the entry from the drop down. Ozzy did it so you can not fail.
I will look at removing the need to join the forum. A new release of the forum software is due soon. I shall have a play once I have customised and installed that.
You might like to note that I was inspired to create the forum as a direct result of my experience on this forum. Naturally, I made life more difficult for myself by using a more complex solution (although still phpBB underneath).

Not an expert and don't want to put a damper on your concept, but just attended a Google SEO course organised my my local Chamber of Commerce (not an SEO company so no axe to grind).
Can't tell you how, but I believe Google (at least) will spot you approach?
Peter
Ozzy
6th August 2005, 22:04
What is wrong with this approach? I have previously run an SEO company with some high profile clients (UK Government, celebrities, etc) and worked in SEO for the past 7 years. I have also had documents published in a few Internet magazines (.net and Internet Magazine) on Ecommerce and search engineering.
There is nothing wrong with this approach and it does not break any of their "rules".
epiphany
7th August 2005, 00:13
I don't see how a chamber of commerce meeting would know anything about the interworkings of the Google algorithm. Even if they were going to change their system so that link pages didn't have an effect they wouldn't be telling you about it. So unless you had an employee from Google there it is just speculation. As it stands currently it works so do it, the algorithm is always changing so its always the case that you optimize under the current system and re optimize when it changes.
Rob Holmes
7th August 2005, 07:28
I have to agree with Ozzy and Epiphany,
Theres nothing 'untoward' for Google to spot - all that is happening is some smallish UK businesses are agreeing to exchange some links.
This sort of thing is totally normal.

As an alternative suggestion (from the SEO forums). How about Triangle linking?
This involves 3 sites (a, b & c), a links to b, b links to c and c links to a.
Apparently this has a much higher "score" in terms of search engines as opposed to straight one - one linking. It's therefore likely to benefit the firms involved much more than "straight" linking.
The links generated are of higher value as they are one way, and don't appear to have been bartered (in the way we are all seeking to do here).
We are up for testing this if at least two others are...
Rob Holmes
15th August 2005, 22:41
Hi
This was suggested here: http://www.ukbusinessforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?t=3957
It could be fairly easy to put in place with a bit of careful planning - then just using 3 different server side include files (we already use 1) - the real problem seems to be that 40% (approx) of people request links but don't reciprocate.
This Link exchange was Ozzys idea so maybe he would like some input - I'm happy to contribute either way.
Rob
Ozzy

The triangle linking is a good idea, or alternatively a "related" linking. Where all business services on one list, retail on another, etc? Just throwing another idea into the pan :)

As per my post of 12th August - please the idea is reciprocal linking - if you've had delays in updating or getting your webdesigner to update the pages then please let me know.
I'm going so start removing links in the next day to those who haven't linked and haven't got in contact to say you will be linking but theres a delay!
I'm cool with delays - they are inevitable occasionally - so will keep anyone on the list who says theres a delay and can I hold on ;)

Hi John - yes no problemn at all - if you point him to this thread theres a simple server side include file he can use and you won't have to perter thim again.
LT - it's very much alive - in fact still in it's infancy - like john if you want to use the server side include file mentioned a few posts back it may save you hassle in the long run and will automatically add new additions to your site and your site to all sites using the file :)

Right folks, with a view to increasing exposure and ease of maintenace for you all on your link pages, we have produced an RSS feed of all the links in this thread.
We have included everyone who has posted a link to the forum (including our competitors).
As it's in RSS 2.0 / XML format, it's easy enough to filter out entries if you want to on your link page.
We have taken the time to categorise the links, so it's also possible to automatically create headers for each group of links.
The URL for the file is as follows:
http://www.enigmaconnections.com/rss/UKBFLinkExchange.xml
If you want to integrate this with a JSP page, we have some sample code that we can let you have a look at (PM / Email us).
If your site uses other technologies - PHP, ASP, CGI etc, it's up to you to sort out parsing the file.
To get everyone here noticed, and possibly raise the profile of the forum we are proposing to submit this feed to a number of RSS feed directories.
We will throw this open to Ozzy for some consideration before taking it further (as it's his show).
Opinions please...
Ozzy

Very swish - only I dont know RSS other than its "the way to go for dynamic remote content". I like it and think its brilliant you have taken the time to do this.
As for submitting to RSS feed directories, I honestly dont know whether that is a good or a bad thing - could it not boost this into a link farm? At the moment the numbers are small enough not to cause a problem but if we get into the hundreds and thousands it could deminish the benefit of doing this. Just a thought for feedback really.
That said, I think I'll ask my guy to play with your RSS feed and see how it compares!

I've noticed that some people have trawled the thread for link info instead of using your link file. They therefore haven't picked up any that have PMed you or had themselves added to the link file some other way.
It might be friendly (although more work) to send people a warning email before you delete their link? Just an idea.

In terms of a link farm, to get on the RSS feed, you have to register and submit to the forum in the first place.
As it stands, the feed is a very high quality set of links - because they have been reviewed by humans (your moderators). These links can be used by many site builders looking for RSS based content. This means this is a valuble commodity, which can also increase the exposure of the forum.
Site owners using the RSS feed also have their chance to filter it. They can choose to only show links that are relevant to their site, based on the category of the link.
It's also simple to choose to display a dozen or so links if you wish, so there is no worry if you end up with thousands of links.
Another idea (relatively simple to implement) is a "shuffle" feature on the RSS feed. This would mean that the list will change order randomly.
This has two positive side effects.
Firstly pages using the feed would dynamically change all the time. Search engines view this as VERY fresh content, giving sites using the feed a ranking boost.
Secondly nobody receives priority, your link might be bottom of list today and at the top tomorrow.
Let me know your opinions on this front. If feedback is positive I'll have a bash at implementing it.
Also it would be nice to know if anyone has incorporated the feed into their site yet.

Count me in this one...
However, isn't linking to site irrelevant to your own site subject or related industry going to count against you as google will see you as less relevant and just a link farm.

I've added you to the RSS file.
As mentioned in an earlier post, it's possible to filter the RSS feed to only pull out links that are relevant to you - based on category.
For example in your case you might match the Parties and Gifts, Family categories as being "compatible" with your site.
You would therefore only display entries from these categories.

Hi
This seems like a good enough place to ask a favour of everyone here.
I know I've only joined today, but I wanted to post this while it's fresh in my head.
In February 2006, I'm going to be attempting to set a new world record for the longest ever DJing marathon. You can check the site out from my sig at the bottom of this post.
I'd love it if as many folks could provide a link anywhere on their site to www.djworldrecord.com
If it falls strictly outside what you're happy to do that's fine, but once I've got enough links in, I'll develop an "official sponsors" page which will include anyone who's linked in.
Cheers

Lisa,
A look over your site reveals that the links you are offering are javascript based. This means that a large number of search engine "robots" won't pick up these links, as they don't attempt to understand javascript code.
As I understand it, everyone else so far has posted a text based link back in return for a text based link. These are more valuble when it comes to search engine exposure.
I'll throw this open to others in the forum, but I think that you aren't offering a fair trade here, as your return links won't be as valuble as the links that you will get from forum members.
Your links will work as far as your site visitors are concerned, but won't offer anything in terms of an increased ranking.
Would it be possible to add a page to your site instead, just containing text based links? (that's what we've done).
Magsite
2nd October 2005, 16:13
Hello Enigma. I've read your post and it sounds to me you know a lot more than me about linking!
I quick look at your site confirms that!.
What I've done is changed my support link text box to a standard link.
Hope this is acceptable, can you help me by explaining how to put your auto update file on my site using frontpage? Thanks
Enigma121
2nd October 2005, 19:13
Hi Lisa,
The changes you made should allow it to be picked up fine by the bots.
If you don't want to spoil the look and feel of the site, put the javascript bit back in but also incorporate a plain text link through to your links page from the first page (most people put this at the bottom of the page in small text).
In terms of using the auto update RSS file, how you do this depends on the type / version of webserver you are running. PM me and I'll try to give you an example of how to incorporate it when I know what your server type is.
I've added your link to our site and into the RSS file.

To explain the thread as I understand it...
There are two lists of links available.
One is in an "include file"
http://www.matrixxhosting.com/link2.inc
Which matrixx maintains. You can put this into your site and it will update automatically.
The other option is in the common "RSS" format, which allows flexibility in how many articles are shown, or which categories. I look after this one.
http://www.enigmaconnections.com/rss/UKBFLinkExchange.xml
If you have a suitable dynamic web server (ASP / JSP / PHP), there are scripts available to include an RSS feed as part of your site. PM me if you are interested in this option, with details of your server.
Rob Holmes
20th October 2005, 17:16
Yep - the include file has everyone that has linked back to Matrixx on it - so if you don't link back then you don't make it onto the include file.
I'll be updating the include file tomorrow and checking all the reciprocal links again!
EnigmaConnection will have to explain the RSS as I've never used this format :)

Hi,
I have just set you something up on these pages,
Cumberland business directory (http://www.uksmallbusinessdirectory.co.uk/Counties/cumberland.html)
Disability products (http://www.wheelchair-ramps.co.uk/ktp-resources.html)
Whilst doing it I noticed I have it set up as Cumberland rather than Cumbria. Which is the more common used name for the county Cumbria or Cumberland?
You can also add your details via the automated process, that will add you to the Cumbria section plus about 4 other pages.
Don't be put of by the 0 PR on the disability site, it is a newish page and is being crawled (check the cache)
Anyone else interested in links like these get in touch and also feel free to submit to my directory

I love Ozzy's idea, and would join in too, if I knew how.
I have a website, which I like, but I left all the design etc. to a 3rd party. And the hosting is done by someone else, who seem reluctant to give me any guidelines on how I can update my site myself. I'm very bad a this sort of thing, but great at lots of other stuff!
If anyone has the time and inclination to give me a hand with this, I'd be most grateful. But not cash grateful!

Emma,
To participate in this you will need to add links to your links page on a regular basis e.g. http://www.redboxvirtualoffice.com/links.html
We can help with providing advice on writing the HTML to do this (it's relatively straightforward to do). The issue comes when you want to add this updated "page" to the rest of your site.
You will need to arrange to get access to your hosting directory so that you can copy files into place. If your existing provider isn't being flexible here it might be worth considering getting another hosting provider. There are a number of these on the forum.
There are SUBSTANTIAL benefits from participating in this link exchange in terms of your ranking within search engines and the amount of traffic / sales enquiries that your site generates.
PM me if you would like a walkthrough on how to add a link, free of course.

No - I - but for some reason I've stopped getting notifications about it - hmm - now I've posted again I should get them.
I'll update our ssi file in the next week with new links and will remove old links that no longer link to us :)
Apologies for the delay!

As a few people are aware ..
Google is now placing a higher value on one way links rather than reciprocal links - from those who use our ssi file - shall I co-ordinate switching to a 1 way linking system ?
It would still work but there would be 3 different ssi's.
A links to B
B links to C
C links to A
So if people are on list A ther use SSI-B
People on list B use SSI-C
and people on list C use SSI-A
Any thoughts - From what I know it would be more beneficial.
Once they were setup in your systems (like the current ssi) they would all be automatic.
And if you use the current ssi all you would have to do is change the name once and it would all start working :)
Rob

What does this mean for little ol' me who is getting a gratis service from her web host? I've given him the original ssi file; do I tell him to stop what he's doing and wait for more information? or will the original linking still be relevant but not as useful?

Two way links are still fine for Google, but they don't hold the value that they used to. One way links are way better, but they need to be ON TOPIC for the site.
I have a suggestion...
You may have seen my post relating to Del.icio.us the social bookmarking site. (And no doubt wondered what I was wittering on about).
They allow you to categorise links using "tags", then bring a list of links back that only match a particular tag. We could use tags to keep our links on topic for our websites.
As an example the following URL returns a list of my links in Del.icio.us, that relate to "SEO" (ideal for search engine optimisation companies / web designers).
http://del.icio.us/html/enigma121/seo?tags=no
We could establish three different user accounts, to hold the three lists for three distinct groups of users.
Group A recieves links from Group C but not Group B, they show links relating to Group B
Group B recieves links from Group A but not Group C, they show links relating to Group C
Group C recieves links from Group B but not Group A, they show links relating to Group A
I think that this approach would need to be "managed" by three link monitors who add links to the various groups.
Suggested user names
UKBFLinksGroupA
UKBFLinksGroupB
UKBFLinksGroupC
This post is starting to read like an RFC document.... Maybe I should start a new thread.

Anyway, this is a new classified ads site, offering FREE classified ads. And as its new I'm also offering this board FREE banner advertising, so have a browse around the site, pick your category you want to target and send me your banner, url, etc. (468x60) and I'll place it for FREE...
If you can't see a category that fits, then let me know and 'll gladly add one for you...we site is always evolving and as such I'd appreciate your ideas!
The FREE banners maybe limited to 3/6 or 12 months depending on how the site takes off...but they are still FREE for a good period. I'd love a link back to eebahgumbay, if you get a FREE Banner!!!
Thanks

Great idea. But not always workable.
sorry, but I have no control over the corporate website of the organisation I am working with.
Also, I have to put my SEO hat on here and say that, with the best intentions in the world, if I was in charge of my own business website, I would want to measure and qualify an inbound link, which would be hard if somebody didn't match with my target profile.
I'd hate to upset anybody. It would smack of that lovely old notice you'd often see in bars "Please do not ask for credit - as a smack in the mouth often offends"
So. Good luck to you all with your linkage! It's a great initiative and I wish all participants abundant good business and search engine rankings as a result of it.
[no offence intended, I just have a sharp writing manner sometimes that may be misconstrued by people who plopped out of bed the wrong side. I'm lovely really!]

Hi -
I am not sure how to play this one, as I have a few sites I can offer people links on - they are:
a telecomms site
a telcomms software site
a hotel (corporate links still relevant)
a wedding dress site
a wedding planning site
a seo site
an engineering site
a conveyancing and personal injury site
I guess, if it is ok with Ozzy, the best thing would be to email me with your requests and I will sort it out for you that way.

Hello all,
I would like to become involved in this. I have three sites that I can give you link from right now, according what is appropriate for your Google rankings (as direct reciprocal links appear of low value). My main site that I have to promote is the following:
Secure, Easy & Free file-sharing software.
Link Text: File-sharing software
Link URL: www .gigatribe. com
Description: Send large files, folders, films and photos to your friends and professional associates, securely, quickly and easily with NO data loss when/if interrupted.
---
Note: For UK web professionals (who I am likely to not be in direct competition with), I have a PR3 site from which I can give you two links from (an English and French versions). If you are a wedding/catering professional, I can also provide appropriate links. However I would appreciate link help from ANY UK site, and can also help you - without prejudice - add my link to your pages if you need a hand.
I have two special offers to as a way of thanks for your help in making this a UK success:
My best kept web 'pro' secret: I have guarded jealousy my best secret for knowing exactly where I am in the web and how well I am doing in reference activities. I will share this to you when the links are set up. It is easy and useable by persons of any technical level and I will even coach you about it through skype if you want assistance. I hope you also give can give the gigatribe software a go to see its benefits. I can help you get to know it, PM you my ID when you get you started. This is a standard reward for everyone that helps me.
Free full licences: For the first people who offer a decent review of the free software on their active UK-market targeted site or blog this one is for you... I have a limited a quota of free Premium licences to give away as a reward – each one worth £15 – giving you all the advanced features. PM me if you want to go for this, especially if you have any challenges or questions setting up, or, when things are in place let me know about the review.I would really appreciate your help.
Many thanks and my best regards,
Paul.

If you would like to exchange links with Upturn Consultancy could you PM me, or better still contact me through the email address on my website? By doing this you will also be able to look at the format of the links.
I should point out that the PR is currently 1 but the website is fairly recent and hasn't been promoted extensively yet.
I should also add that I reserve the right to remove links at any time but will not do so without warning. In the unlikely event that I decide to do this I will let individual parties know, or post a general note on this forum.
Hope to hear from you.
