Hi,
Please please could someone here spare some advice, I'd like to put together a networking site maybe using wordpress or joomla and if anyone has used or using this type of program I would be grateful for some tips, want to know how easy/hard to install (little knowledge of DIY website) them, user friendly, what features does it provide you, and how much it cost to use them for your website, are you allowed to place adverts in your website?
Many thanks,
Mx

Hi,
I did my site using joomla :)
Both wordpress and joomla are both free as they are open source. I've not worked with wordpress before so can;t say much, but with joomla the installation is fairly straight forward and for a simple site, it's not too bad getting your head around things (there is good documentation on it, which is very helpful!).
In terms of features, it depends really on what you would like your website to do. For joomla there are many basic features available, but also loads of extensions that you can download and install depending on the functionality you want.
If you could give an idea of what type of site you want, and what you want it to do, then some more specific advice and tips can be given :)

You should also look at BlogEngine.net. This is also free and open source. I prefer as its very easy to install and you do not need to know any programming. However, if you did want to pull the code apart and modify it, the language is Asp.net and C# (you can also use VB.NET). Its a personnal preference, but I find these languages easier to us and learn than PHP for web programming.
An example site of mine is here (http://www.dndizzy.com)

I've created a few small wordpress based membership sites.
One that took a weekend - Free networking Event (http://thirstthursday.co.uk) - has a very basic membership system built-in.
Haven't used Joomla for years.
Depending on what you are looking for, I'm also building a super high-end community system again based on WP (URL is not live as it's still being developed).
So my consensus would be to use WP whether you're looking for something basic or advanced.

Hi,
Thank you all. I'm going to play around with Wordpress and see. Never used it before so hopes it's not too complicated.
I was told that I don't need to download and unzip to my PC and I could just upload it direct to my host.
Many thanks
