Hi Tony,
As you know I have Hamish my little sitepal butler on my site. To be honest I prefer him to this, I dont really think that this effect works. It looks very amateurish and I certainly wouldn't put it on my site. I think the characters work far better and I really dont grasp whats trying to be acheived with this human looking character.

Thanks for your feedback on this
Oddcast are getting close to software that will change a photo of your face into a virtual character.
So Tom is really taking a step towards that, although it could take years to finish to a high standard.

I don't know if you remember but bud light used to have a promotion going where you could upload your face as a picture then make it speak like this. It was a free gimmick which most people used for comedy :) This one you have posted is definitely better and shows the development in this type of programming. I still think his face looks a bit deformed and I personally would prefer the cartoon character.
Also as the type of person that likes to do everything myself I would prefer to film myself talking as opposed to letting a computer animate my face for me :)

I'm sorry, but it makes me think of South Park, when they animate photos of real people. Especially the scary eyes :P Prefer the cartoon characters myself, but as you say, the technology is still in development.

Personally I think it's amazing. I'm not a fan of sound on websites but I can see a future where instead of being given a choice of entering a flash or static site, you will be given a choice of an animated or flash site.
I think the technology is still not there, but it's in the forseeable future and as long as it's used correctly I think there can be a benefit.

A site in Flash is an animated site as Flash is basically an animation programme :D I think all the sitepal stuff is done in flash.

Imagine a web with nothing but flash... *shudder*
interesting concept, but still prefer the cartoons. Keep us up to date on any breakthroughs ;)

I think there is a lot more of this to come with faster connections and the like. We will soon see a lot more of these popping up.
I like the idea of putting a face on it but it is quite a complex process for the program to recognise all of the different parts of the face, proportions, shading ect to generate a 3d model. Its number crunching work. Its either create a program clever enough to do that with a high level of accuracy or do it manualy. Either way its not cheap.
I think for now the only way for someone to create a perfect one of these would be to have your face imaged in a 3d imaging machine (not sure if thats the proper name), you know the things with the lasers.
