I have a basic website that has been running for a couple of months selling a golf product, I also sell on ebay, I get about 80 hits a day, is this any good and also how do people find my site as i have not started to advertise properly yet but i am in the process of setting some adverts up?

How many of the hits are turning into sales?

With 80 visitors a day to the website your should be be making at least a couple of sales per day. People will find your site through a variety of methods, if you add some analytics to the site they will tell you which they are.

Have you a google account, you could set up adwords and use their analysing tools to see how many hits your site is getting and what keywords are getting the hits

yes just set up adwords, i would of thought that 2 sales from 80 hits would be a really good return, i was thinking more like 1 sale in 250 hits, i know i visit loads of sites but rarely buy from them, does anyone know a accurate visits to sales return rate?

A well built ecommerce site should easily be able to make 4 sales/hundred visitors. If your sales are 1 in 250 then it's pretty obvious that they don't like either your website or the product.
That being said, most ecommerce sites take a year or two to become established. During this time there is constant adjustment and tweaking to make sure it is an effective as possible. The problem you have is that the site looks homemade. It's not going the attract the club sales you need until it has a bit of polish.
One more thought, maybe you aren't selling the product because nobody actually wants a pencil on a bit of string.

I sure all sites sales are different and it depends what price you are selling for, I have sold over 500 pencilpals without really trying mainly through people seeing them on ebay and making larger orders for there club, i play golf and it is a useful item so i think it has got potential but i just need to get them out there for people to see. May look at improving website but dont have endless funds.

Something to bare in mind, the number of hits per number of visitors is very relative. For example, fewer expensive products will be sold compared to the number of cheaper products sold. The different niche of product will also be a factor.
However, fisicx does make a valid point that as a rule of thumb, you need around 2-5 purchases per 100 visitors (i.e. what's called a 2-5% conversion rate). Do bear in mind, that's per 100 visitors, not per 100 page views.
100 visitors = 100 different people (for the sake of argument)
100 page views = anywhere between 1 and 100 visitors. This is because a visitor may look at any number of pages.

Agree, as an example we rank very well for "Dog collars" however that term is sooooooo inclusive conversion rates are quite low (2% tops). You could be looking for any breed of dog, any material collar, any colour, style etc, etc. However, we rank well for "Cat ID tags" also and conversions are double figures easy for that phrase.
The point being if I just sold dog collars I'd need much, much more traffic to make the same number of sales as if I sold just cat tags. :) That said I only need to sell one to make the same £ as 3 ID tags
Does that make any sense? :|

Hi Bernie,
Slightly off topic but instead of worrying about the PPC for now spend your money on direct sales to Golf Clubs and Sports outlets. Send samples with a letter, set up meetings etc. You would have no need to worry about internet sales then!
My hubby is a golfer and I am going to show him your product (might even buy him one!)
Just for fun I am going to try a little Twitter experiment this evening with your product :D (a good one! hopefully!)
