The best thing to read to start with is Google Webmaster Tools. Get it from the horse's mouth. Once you get a reasonable idea of what it's all about, you'll be in a better position to judge which of the hundreds of thousands of offerings on the web are actually useful and which of the even more are snake oil.

There are two ways. One is to download and install Google Toolbar to your browser.
The other is to use any of the hundreds of free web based tools on - yes, you guessed it - the web.
Take a look at Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PageRank) for more info.

Hi J, as mke says use google webmaster tools - a useful link is here SEO-Google (http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35291) there is a link to their SEO started guide at the top of the page.
To find out your ranking for your keywords you can either type in your search terms manually and check them, use free tools across the web or use Google webmaster tools on your website. You can then see where your site ranks on a weekly basis for your top 20 search terms.
Hope these help.:)
