Is there any way of knowing what an e-commerce site is powered by (cart wise)? or is it a question of experience?
Excuse my ignorance if I don't have the terms correct..

Sometimes you can check the source code in your browser by clicking "View" then "Source Code".
That may tell you. Otherwise some carts have a link at the bottom to their provider.

We have built our own cart and integrated 5 payment gateways (Paypal, Protx, Worldpay, 2Checkout and Cheque) that way we can change it for our customers needs.
But some have links at the bottom showing where they are from.
