Hi,

I use paypal at the moment to take payment but I was thinking of getting something a little more professional.

Is there any clear winner when it comes to using Protx/nochex/worldpay/securehosting etc in terms of fees?#

which is the best?

I don't have an ssl at the moment, would I need to get one in order to use one of these (or alternative) options?

Would vote Protx route - 10p a transaction or £20 a month covering first 1000 transactions. BUT the big point is your bank. You need a merchant account and will need to negotiate a transaction fee with them.

Hi, for the listed payment option, you need a merchant account from a participating bank which usually costs £150 or more. This is a one of fee. For most of the payment providers e.g Nochex, Protx, you would get a certain amount of transaction free per month and then their quoted fee applies to subsequent transactions.

Nochex offers a solution similar to paypal, this is their seller account. I think their fees in comaprison to paypal isnt too different. Check out their website for the http://www.nochex.com/. It also has a transaction limit of £100.

If you do go for the merchant account option then i ll say Protx is more popular. If you are after one without a merchant account, then I ll recommend paypal website payment pro. All payments will be processed on your website but you willl need SSL, this also applies to the other payment processing providers.

For more information on merchant account and how to apply for one see http://www.businesslink.gov.uk/bdotg/action/detail?type=RESOURCES&itemId=1073791013.

If you need assistance or require more information please feel free to send me a pm. There are some available discounts,:) you can use in aquiring a merchant account.

I have used paypal payments pro but they're not cheap - the bit that especially annoys me is that they charge the same % rate for debit cards as they do for credit cards. However, they have now shot themselves in the foot as they will only let me use it on one website and I'm just launching my second one so I've had to go out and look for a better deal.

Now I have a trading history, the best deal I have found is streamline through FSB for the merchant account and I'm going to use Protx for the online and telephine transactions.

Ahh I've heard about the FSB but I can't quite find the info atm...last time I checked though wasn't there a yearly fee?

Does it really work out cheaper to go through them?

My Vote is Protx - Very simple to use and easy to integrate into most carts

I have been using this online payment system Website,

Alampayment.info

Credit card payments can be sent & received

Although its not shopping cart compatible yet unless you hire an IT Pro to install,

I find it much cheaper to use & not so many questions & criteria as other companies refused me for in the past....

It's all very well saying protx, but what's important it the merchant account you link it to.

...when you start getting quoted 30 day settlement and fees close to 2% ones enthusiasm will evaporate. FSB is really route well worth perusing.

Bear in mind paypal fees can be 1.9%+20p if you have reasonable sales volume.

I vote protx too - and when you use a merchant account with your bank the settlement tine is roughly 24 hours - it rolls over from Protx to your bank account at midnight every day.....fees vary - HSBC are currently between 1.4% and 1.88% depending on volume of transactions - protx charge £20+VAT per month up to 1000 transactions per month, and the whole thing has run smotthly for us for the last 5 years......

When we opened our HSB account, we didn't pay a fee for the merchant account - it may have been to get our business, but its always worth asking before you decide 'which' bank to use!

I use paypal at the moment to take payment but I was thinking of getting something a little more professional. When you say more professional, is this purely from a customer paying you through the PayPal payment gateway and you don't like your customer seeing you accept payment through a PayPal merchant account?
- One thing to consider about moving away from PayPal is that eBay uses PayPal as their payment method so lots of people use eBay so also have PayPal accounts and are familiar with them so trust them.

However, if by "more professional" you are talking about the simplistic way that PayPal works within your site, giving it a less professional feel to the shoppers experience, such as the basic PayPal Add to Basket buttons, the PayPal shopping basket opening in a new browser window/tab and lack of features you get with higher end shop solutions etc. then we may be just what you are after.

You could easily replace your existing PayPal add to basket buttons and PayPal shopping cart with the Shop Integrator ecommerce plug-ins. They are simple to retrofit in to your exisitng website in place of the PayPal buttons so changes to your website are minimised, which will keep your cost and disruption down when making the switch.

Using the Shop Integrator ecommerce solution will give you a superior shopping basket service that keeps the shopper on your web page as they view their basket or proceed through the checkout process. There are a wealth of features like product stock control to automatically reduce product quantities as products are purchased, simple and advance weight based shipping plans to add shipping costs to orders during checkout, multi-currency pricing, discount codes, special offers, to name a few.

You keep PayPal as your payment gateway but the customer only see this at the very last point in the checkout process when they are ready to make the debit, credit card or PayPal account payment.

Please do take a look at our website www dot shopintegrator dot co dot uk to get a better idea of what you could achieve and see the demo. Feel free to ask any questions if you want more information.

Hi paretowasright,

I feel my answer has relevance to your question. I am not sure why it has begun to grator on you, apologies if something in there has offended you. What has offended you in particular?

Hi if the transaction is being done outside my shop via paypal do I still need a SSL license?

You don't need an SSL licence with Paypal because, as you say, the transaction does not take place on your website.
