Hi,
Found this forum while locked in my dark room with the curtains shut as per usual - typical nerd!
I am a new Web Solutions business who basically deals with small uk businesses, previously i worked in sales for a very large data company, fortunately i still have my client database so i am busy working my persuasive powers on them to get their money and build them a basic but nice website.
Just thought i would say Hi and i look forward to annoying you all with questions and queries
you can find me at www.doctor-webby.com

Welcome to the forums, Dr Webby. I'm sitting in a dark room with the curtains closed too. I however, am very cool, and not geek-like at all.
Do let me know if I can help in any way. Wishing you every success.
Shelley.

Welcome, and nice name :) Good to hear you have some sort of client db, it's always hard to pick up the customers at the begining if you don't.

Well if I could give you any advise to gaining clients it would be (and excuse me if I am preaching to the converted)
define your main market place, many web design companies make the mistake of thinking the whole world; which can be true but our experience would be clients like to meet and greet before they buy.
Once you have defined your market find out how that market finds web designers, ideally find out what they type into search engines. For instance through
http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
I see that "design Kent site web" is searched for over 200 times every month so if I was a web design company in Kent I may consider integrating "Kent website design" throughout my main page, meta tags and title.
That's a good way to get things going, IMO of course :D

Hi there, Doc.
I'm not an expert on web design, but I found your site well laid out and understandable. However, you need to address the many grammatical errors on your home page. They undermine the image you are trying to portray.

Grammar checkers are usually fairly stupid. I am no writer so thankfully I have an ex journalist as a business partner :) Here is a slightly edited version of the text on your front page with some apostrophes, full stops colons, to and too's corrected and semi colons added :) Don't take my word for the corrections though as English isn't my forte :D
Doctor-Webby welcomes you! We are a new web solutions agency with the following mission statement: Smart, Affordable, Effective.
Our Web Solutions include: Web Design, E-Commerce, Logos/Banners and Email Creative (what is email creative?)
Smart: If your website isn't smart then people will leave. Appearance is an eye catcher so get it right first time.
Affordable: If it's too cheap, where's the catch? If it's too expensive then you go elsewhere. We pride ourselves on being honest, so the cost will be made clear from day one and it will not change unless you do!
Effective: What use is a broken light bulb? The same principle applies here: what use is a website with no visitors or a website that cannot be found? We design and optimise your solution so that it can be found by all major search engines. Not doing this is the main reason for websites failing!
In brief, your experience with us will be jargon free: you will get the solution you want, feel like you really have played an important role and been listened to. With the money you make and save of course, you might even want to buy me a beer. Thanks!

Now you're going to learn just how much of a stickler I am for grammar and about good writing! :) First, I shall provide specific comments on each section. Second, I shall offer my own version of your text.
I hope you don't mind if I'm specific in my comments; they are meant to be constructive.
*************
"Doctor-Webby welcomes you! We are a new web solutions agency with the following mission statement: Smart, Affordable, Effective."
Three adjectives do not a mission statement make; you don't need the colon; you don't need the capital letters.
This may not be the best example of creativity, but what about adding a fourth adjective to form an acronym (or is it an acrostic)?
"Doctor-Webby welcomes you! We can solve your problems with EASE". In other words, Effective, Affordable, Smart, Efficient.
*************
"Our Web Solutions include: Web Design, E-Commerce, Logos/Banners and Email Creative."
An action statement would be sharper. You don't need the colon since the sentence reads correctly without it. You need fewer capital letters. The slash between 'logos' and 'banners' is too informal. The phrasing of the four options should be consistent. You should make it clear that Email Creative is an application because many visitors may not know this.
*************
"Smart: If your website isn't smart then people will leave. Appearance is an eye catcher so get it right first time."
This doesn't read well, although I understand what you are trying to say.
*************
"Affordable: If it's too cheap, where's the catch? If it's too expensive then you go elsewhere. We pride ourselves on being honest, so the cost will be made clear from day one and it will not change unless you do!"
You need to be more concise. Also, the customer is not going to change (a Star Trek shape-shifter?), the requirements are.
*************
"Effective: What use is a broken light bulb? The same principle applies here: what use is a website with no visitors or a website that cannot be found? We design and optimise your solution so that it can be found by all major search engines. Not doing this is the main reason for websites failing!"
Again, you need to be more concise.
*************
So, putting it all together, applying the suggested changes, shifting the order a little, making statements more concise, and restating some of your points, here's what I suggest:
Doctor-Webby welcomes you! We offer web design services, e-commerce solutions, logos and banners, and support for Email Creative. We can solve your problems with E-A-S-E!
Effective: Of what use is a website with no visitors? We design web pages that will be found by the major search engines.
Affordable: Our solutions are cost-effective. We will not change our price unless you change your mind.
Smart: If your website isn't smart, visitors will leave. First impressions are lasting impressions - we get it right the first time.
Efficient: Your time is money. We work quickly so you aren't kept waiting.
OK - that's it. I hope you find these comments useful.

You are very welcome, a web designer helping another web designer, who would have thought it :)
In my case, I'm not a web designer. In fact, I'd make a rotten web designer. On the other hand, my business is "excellence in communication", so I'm hoping my comments will prove useful from that perspective.
And, you've prompted me to change my signature!

Hi Dr Webby
I see you're getting some really good advice on here - and taking it!
I had a look at your first project. "Don't sleep with a drip call your plumber"   That cheered up my morning!! Is that slogan your idea??
If you ever get a pizza house client - try "Seven days without a pizza makes one weak."
:D
