Hi all yet again I am shocked at how much money Sage want for payroll support for the year (£138 yr), can anyone suggest a cheaper easier alternative as we are only a small company with 4 employees.

Excellent, simple, there is a free version and the paid version is inexpensive. Tom who runs 12Pay is on the forum and is very helpful.

A vote for moneysoft from me. It really is easy to use and the year end looks simple. Surprised at your sage quote as mine was 6 times that. Plus as they do not support v10 anymore they want me to upgrade at another £700 odd.
So I stopped the support and told them I would not renew after a lot of pressure. So they stopped access to there website support which I can understand but upon looking for the year end booklet they said since v10 was not supported they would not send one but I can print a pdf one off the website. But going to that I am refused access.
Sage phoned me asking why I would not renew and I told them why cost etc and that they are so petty ie will not allow access to a pdf file to download so I can do year end and neither would they email it. They said to use an old one if I had one.

Thanks for the 2 options to look at but will remember to get the yr end out of the way before giving them the push!!
I don't know much about the payroll so it needs to be simple and bullet/idiot proof. Over the years we have found Sage to "build in" faults which need their sage cover to get you round it. We also use the nominal link to "talk" to our accounts package but i guess this is a very simple manual entry.

Omigod ... welcome to the forum. Another vote for moneysoft here - VERY easy to use: click (http://www.moneysoft.co.uk/pm_intro.htm) and at £50 + VAT per year, its good value for money.
Good luck.

Moneysoft - it is a fantastic package.
I use it in house for our clients payroll and always recommend it to clients who want to do their own payroll.

Outsourcing is another option you could think of. Loads of us on here do payroll. Not as expensive as you may think.

4 employees x 12 months plus Year End Returns, etc for £50 + VAT ... you'd be doing well to beat that Julie

Unlike all of the others 12pay seems to offer unlimited employee numbers across multiple companies for one fee that fits what we require. We use SAGE, originally introduced as an accountant recommended package and have had a few run ins with them over support, lack thereof and cost. We have survived without support options over many years by modifying the SAGE report dates but this is becoming increasingly fraught as gaining stealth access to SAGE HMRC e-submission updates is increasingly like finding a needle in an unsupported haystack.
I'll give 12pay a trial run and hopefully be able to confine SAGE payroll to the dustbin of redundant software that it really does deserve.

Thanks for trying us, BN. It is worth pointing out that this year (coming on April 6) the calculation method of NI and reporting requirements to HMRC are changing in a way that makes it unlikely that any un-updated package can continue in use, because the introduction of the Upper Accrual Point goes beyond what can be achieved by adjusting parameters.
And thanks for the kind words of others on this thread.

I am too in a dilema, I have only ever used sage payroll and hate learning new software. I don't like the fact that Sage charge for update disks and have managed until now to manually update but reading this thread seems it will be near on impossible.
All my clients I do payroll on use Sage Payroll (and none of these pay for the updates either) and my own payroll is Sage as well. Does anyone know if there is a software that can run maybe up to 50 companies payroll on it, and be easy to learn how to use as I hate learning new things and have hardly anytime to do so running 3 different businesses. I was recommended a payroll software at a revision seminar and had it written down in a notepad but have misplaced the notepad.
Thanks
Alison

Alison, I used to be a slave to Sage Payroll, but MoneySoft Payroll Manager (http://www.moneysoft.co.uk/pm_intro.htm) is an excellent product ... have a look at the Payroll Manager 100 version.

Hi Alison,
Sounds like we are in the same gold plated SAGE boat, grab an oar. I loaded 12pay this morning and had a quick look around it. Couple of fast look points I'd make is that the report date only seems to go to 2008 on the latest release and I haven't figured out how to run payroll (the set process date and update records part of SAGE). I'm also not clear if or how legislative updates come through 12pay. An e-mail patch or e-mail instructions possibly? I like to think I'm savvy wrt new software so if it's not springing out to me it must take a bit of digging. I'm reminded a bit of my first time with the latest MS office software, took me ages to find where they hid the print button (mainly because they removed it competely and made it menu or toolbar only).
Being male, I avoid help files so I guess I'll just have to see if all the useful info is on the support videos.

BN,
1. Whenever you ask for a report a "report requested" form appears for a few seconds, Just click on it to alter the report year or period and the countdown will stop allowing you to alter it and continue.
2. To complete a period in a payroll click on the button at the bottom right of the payroll form (named as the next period). If its greyed out you have altered something since you last ran reports/payslips, so just run them again and the button will light up.
3. Legislative updates are a fresh software download that we email registered users about. The software you've downloaded handles from 2006 to 5th April 2010. Data is automatically updated next time you use updated software.
