Hi,

We have just installed a router and three network cards. Two are working fine on the laptops but the desktop is ok for about 10 mins and then it is disconnecting itself. I assume this is some kind of setting?? I have tried phoning the manufacturers 24hr helpline - but nobody there!!

Has anyone any ideas?

Cheeers

Anne.

If you use it during those ten minutes does it still cut off or are you saying it cuts off ten minutes after you stop using it? :)

Hey Their,

Are you running a wireless network?

Hi,
thanks for your reply, yes we are running a wireless network - but to be honest we could't work today with the problem, so reverted back to the old modem.
We rang the helpline got through but they were hopeless.

We will try re installing again this weekend so if we still have problems i'll come back to the forum. Someone suggested that it could be a faullty network card (as the other 2 laptops are ok) would you agree?

Many thanks

It sounds like dodgy hardware to me!

Does it happen at same time each time you try?

What brand hardware?

Are you using Windows Wireless Service (Wireless Zero Configuration) to run your hardware or are you using your hardware manufacturer's drivers?

If you don't know say.

Hi Hunny

I use wireless and one reason for the connection dropping out was the lack of filters on ALL telephone points - do you have these???? Since I put my last one on the connection rarely drops. I use Netgear D345G router & have to say, not many problems... Try switching off the router for 10 secs then back on again, that usually works.

I've just set up a wireless network at home. I had a problem with Windows XP connecting to my Linksys Wireless Router. I found that just removing the removing the wireless card from the hardware list and restarting the system fixed the roblem of not connecting. Might be worth a try. Failing that remove the hardware completely and doing a complete reinstall.

Silly question to ask. Have you tried it card in a different PC?

Hi everyone,
thank you all for your suggestions.
In response -

The problem happens pretty much the same each time we use
The maufacturer is belkin
we are using manufacturers drivers
yes- we do have filters on all phones
we are using windows xp

as said previously i suspect that it could be a faulty card and looking at the box i've noticed there is a bar code on it which says previously owned (pc world) which i didn't know when purchased. So it's going back tomorrow and i'll try again and i'll let you know what happens.
Maybe someone took it back for the same reason and they sold it on??

Regards,
Anne

If its Belkin you should see a blue monitor icon in the bottom right.

Right click on it, and click "Disable Windows Zero Configuration"

If it says "Enable Windows Zero Configuration" when you right click, let me know.

Also are you aware of other wireless LANs in the neighbourhood?

Hi Graham,
Try to Swap the wireless card on the desktop with a different brand. Since the other 2 Laptops are not dropping connections it is obvious that the card might be faulty. I have resolved a similar problem.

Hi Goodman,

Have now swapped the desktop card for a new one - only its the same make, it disconnected once, but is better than the old one. I'll give it a couple of days and if i still have the problem i'll take your advice and get a different brand.

cheers

Wireless LANs do take a while to be configured properly. Even "perfect" hardware requires some tweaking to prevent disconnects.

Are you using a similar channel to neighbouring wireless LANs. If you are that can cause disconnects. Aim to be 3 channels higher or lower. You can choose your channel on the router web interface.

If you are using Windows Zero Configuration this can sometimes be a problem for users. Every 1-10 mins it rescans for available networks to connect to which can result in disconnects. This is why I recommend using Belkin software to manage your connection.

Dial on demand. If you have this option selected (it is by default witBelkin) your broadband will disconnect when not being used.

P2P Software - The use of P2P can overwhelm routers such as Belkin ones which as it can require over 100+ simulataneous connections to other internet PCs which causes a disconnect.

Windows USB Power Management. If you have power management enabled on Windows XP. XP will disconnect your USB Wireless adapter if it thinks its not being used. Another annoying issue. You can turn it off in Device Manager (Control Panel >> System >> Device Manager).

I think you should be aware of these common wireless broadband issues. Perhaps swap the adapter first (sorry I didn't see that post) but if the problem continues its likely to be one of the above.

Hi Graham,

Have been using the new card for about a week now and it is still disconnecting but not as much, although its still very annoying.
I will try the options that you gave above. meanwhile the two laptops are fine.
Cheers.

Connect to the router web interface and find out there. It should be on or near the menu where you type in your ISP information.

Have you looked at all my suggestions?
