Hi!

I've just registered and looking to vibe with new business links and hopefully get some feedback / assistance regarding my company.

I started up a collective image around two years ago whilst working for a london based design agency. I work with a close friend and business has been good. We are based in east london and looking to move more central in the next coming month.

We have had some excellent clients and most of them have come back for repeat work. 90% of work has been generated by word of mouth, someone passing on a recommendation and so forth. Now we are looking to expand on the work front and I wanted to gather opinions on the best method for attracting more clients (the holy grail no?). At the moment we have the website and send out DVD's AND CDROMs to anyone that requests one.

Definitely not a business man but we have always delivered on time and are able to produce projects on par with the big cats. So producing the work nor the finish isn't a problem at all.

We also cover so many areas within design (print, web, motion graphics, illustration etc) another problem is being labeled as a jack of all trades even through the quality (not to be too much of a big head here) is always consistent and very high across these fields.

Any Ideas?

Thanks

Jamie

Hi Jamie and welcome.

Many people who start up in business are good technically but do not have much experience of running/growing businesses. The trick is finding good people who can help in the areas that you are not good at.

These forums are a good place to start with a collective wealth of knowledge. :)

Dear Jamie,

I'd recommend networking as an effective tool.

For virtual networking, these forums are unbeatable.

For face to face networking, I belong to the local Business Network International (BNI) group (see bni-europe.com) which works well for us, but there are similar groups such as BoB or BRE - or you an even start your own!

The text on the about us page was very off putting for me. Words like "peeps" isn't going to win you any clients and slagging off "nerd-like programmers" makes me cringe! :)

Hi Jamie

welcome to the forum, nice site you've got there. Although id suggest stearing clear of popups, theres so much stuff that stops them now i had to agree to 3 alerts before seeing your site.

For the less web wise client might get a little confused. :)

We work with a wide range of clients and all like it that we are frank, honest and speak our minds. One thing that I'm trying to push forward is more personality to shine through the site. Its how my team talks and how I feel. Being ourselves has helped us get clients such as reuters, tiger beer and some really nice SME's because we don't try and be something we're not (stuffy corporate suited yes men). Its tongue in cheek and relaxed and I think your gonna get an idea we're a bit off the cuff from the holding page let alone the home page!!

Not to everyones likin, but you cant please everyone and we're not saying all programmers are nerd-like...just 95/96%

Yeah very good point the sex/crappy ad trade has killed it for legitimate popups.

Amending as we speak, thanks Ian.

As a nerd-like programmer, I'd like to point out your design will not win the affections of any search engines ;). You're missing a doctype, and the meta description / keyword tags. Stunning designs aren't much if no-one gets to your page in the first place!

Yep this is one of the main areas we need to amend, thanks for the feedback. I'm looking to make the changes as soon as. J
