Have a look at the site that is top of this google search http://www.google.co.uk/search?sourceid=navclient&hl=en-GB&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4DKUK_en-GBGB209GB209&q=free+bet

the betsfreebets one, now to me that looks real crap with hardly any content but look at the links page, 5 odd pages of reciprical links! Maybe they are getting more value then people give credit for. What do people make of this? I don't really know so am interested in peoples thoughts

The site looks OK to me, just another affiliate site, same as many. 5 pages of recip links under the guise of a 'betting directory' isn't exactly rocket science. I'd probably have one too if I were you. Worst case scenario - the recips get discounted.

gets said on here PR is worthless and read many arguements for and against the value of keywords in domains. My point is a site blatantly doing recip links so are they as pointless as people make out. The content really is crap compared to other sites in the market, and no, before anyone pipes up, im not including my site in that comment.:)

Google is really dropping the ball these days, one search I do sometimes has consistently had a site in the top few results for months, and that site has been closed down for months now....

Their results seem all over the place, certainly worse than they used to be years ago I feel.

But suppose amongst all those reciprocal links there is one little gem that Google really likes, that could be enough to propel the site to the #1 spot. As to the content, you may have more but again there may just be something in there that google likes in preference to your site, maybe it's because they have less affiliate links than you...

I'm sure there's a joke in there mate but it's lost on me

Agree with the above, just because the site has a few pages of reciprical links doesn't prove or disprove anything. SEO wise to me the site looks pretty healthy.

No... no joke. I simply noticed you're pretty hot on inbound links and I'm actually wondering what method you are using to determine inbound links?

James.

Reciprocal links on their own won't have much value and may be detrimental to a site's ranking (e.g. if the outbound links go to bad neighbourhoods.)

But reciprocal links as part of a much bigger picture of inbound directory links, inbound sitewide, inbound one-way and outbound authority links will at worst have no effect and at best have a positive effect.
