In my previouse Job I had a lot of dealings with producing Barcodes. One thing I would recommend is to use something like MSWord to produce the barcode. Excel has a problem with check digits.

The best label print we found was an Elton or Zebra thermal printer.

SATO do very good printers and label/bar code generating software
http://www.sato-uk.com/

There are different types - 2D and 3D - depends on what you want to embed into the bar code and the industry you are supplying too ?

Give them a call and see what they say
