I would like to add a search bar to my website. It will only need to search the pages on my site and also record what people are putting in the field box. Dose anyone know some good software for what I am looking for. I would much rather have software than a online application. Any ideas????

Also I had a post up for ideas on a stat page but the only applications you guys mentioned are all on line applications. Again do you know of any software for this requirement?

hmm.. you mean you want to use an application to get your webstats? I haven't heard of any myself, but these would still require server-side scripts. To allow searching of your website you could use googles "Site search" tool, but to record searches you would still need some server side scripts. There are probably websites that provide both the search functionality and record searches, but if by using "software" you mean a browser plugin, you would probably need someone to develope this for you from scratch (and many visitors may be unhappy about downloading plugins to search your website).

Whats wrong with using some server side scripts?

Mathew - if you want free software to install here's a couple of options...

http://www.aardvarkind.com/ or http://www.webalizer.com/ for stats

and..

http://www.tsep.info/ for a search box for your site

Hope this helps,

Rob

Hi Mathew,

Yes MatrixxHosting include both these scripts as well as about 30 other handy scripts as part of our standard deal.

We do however have better stats packages already running.

All our supplied scripts automatically install as well.

Hi Mathew,

You can have unlimited of both, you are only limited on diskspace and bandwidth which can be increased as needs be.

See http://www.matrixxhosting.com/hosting.shtml

Feel free to PM me for more details or email support@matrixxhosting.com

mmmm not bad. Do you think Matrix will ever go unlimited on GB and Bandwidth. Anything like this going http://www.streamline.net/bu.php

no sorry,

It slows the servers down because everyone piles as much as they can on the boxes and servers don't have unlimited processors ;)

I find the only real problem with most hosts is bandwidth. 20GB is plenty if you're running a shop / information website, etc, and not running a download server.

How many sites do you accomodate on each server unit?

well we have a number of servers - the most on 1 is around 350 main sites that probably have a pointer/alias domain or 2 added to them.

A couple of servers have 5 or 6 sites - the rest between 100 and 300.

The main point is we charge enough not to oversell on diskspace.

All servers are under populated to avoid them slowing down (although they all have busier periods) and we offer a 30 day money back guarantee so people can feel safe checking us out.

A final caveat that I'm sure webstuff well knows is it only takes one 'rogue' script on a server to slow it down dramatically no matter how undersold or oversold a server.

lol - I don't know I haven't compared the packages and I don't know your host.

All I can say is many people come to us after trying cheaper hosts.

Our stuffs fairly priced for the level of service, quality and stability of systems and time we spend with our customers - I can't help it if other companies offer their services cheaper.

I'm sure most of our customers will agree that we are worth every penny they pay and more <smile>

I can supply telephone numbers for references if you wish!

Mathew - feel free to PM me or email me - this thread is already way way off topic!

are any threads over a page still on topic? ever? Clearly you appear to put a lot of effort into customer support, a service which most web-hosts are severely lacking. Good for you :)
