Alrighty There!

Can anyone tell me how Twitter works - ie, the technology behind it? I've got an idea for a similar type of website, whereby users post something, but I don't want it to be a forum, I just want people to post - even if they are one time users. I don't even want people to be able to reply - no more details I'm afraid!

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers.

Twitter is built on a Ruby on Rails system

At the end of the day there are pros and cons of all the possible systems it could have been built using and there is no "right one" hence why it, Facebook, MySpace etc are all built in different frameworks etc

Twitter is just a database.

Users have the ability to add a post of up to 160chars.

Users have the ability to display results based on who is in their "follow" list.

Pretty much Twitter.

Biggest problem with Twitter is their use of another company, tinyurl, for link abbreviation, instead of simply writing their own. Don't go duplicating that.

how Twitter works Not a clue, would like to know also. No advertising huge server / bandwidth bills. Are they getting paid by some viral marketing companies?

As has been said above, the actual coding of Twitter isn't complicated - it is simply a DB of users, statuses, and links between users with a simple user interface. Replicating this would be pretty easy...

However... Twitter's value is in it's user base that is now apparently over 10 million and growing  How they monetise this is yet to be seen though ;)

Hope this helps

Richard

P.S. Out of interest what is to stop spammers sending a constant stream of unwanted adverts which would make your system unusable in the end?
