What have other peoples experiences been?
Does the distance between potential clients mean the business suffers.
Are there any big pro's?

I would say that it depends, somewhat, on what your business is exactly.
If your an agricultural engineer or something I would hazard a guess that you will be quids in.
If in the other hand you service high rise lifts in tower blocks and large shopping centres you might struggle.....
With technology as it is though there are very few places where you cannot run a business

My business is dynamic video marketing, and we're based in Norwich. True, the East of England is a little behind the bigger cities when it comes to new technologies but this has worked well for me. I've only just started this business after my studies, I've found there's very few other companies doing the same thing, comparatively, and the area is slowly waking up to the new forms of marketing and promotion, so business has been going from strength to strength despite the recession, and we're getting to experiment and almost blaze our own trail in some aspects.
If we'd started in London, we would have been eaten alive, but Norwich and the East has supported us well. Besides, I think I read somewhere that Norwich actually has one of the higher rates of new business survival compared to other areas, but please don't quote me on that. I think this is a great place to start business, of course as Fenland mentioned it would depend on what you do.
