How do I find out what papers there are in our area and who to send our press releases to?

Is there an easy way?

We have one main evening local one main free paper and loads of little ones - is it a case of picking them all up when I see them?

Hi,

I used this website as it lists loads of publication by location and the demographic:-

http://www.nsdatabase.co.uk/

Hope that helps

CheersGood website but it is hard to find vertical publications i.e. if you wanted a list of all computer mags or all car related publications etc.

Is there another website that people have found that can do this or is BRAD still the only option?

There are lots of others, but are all paid for services, I have a book called Hollis, with consumer and trade magazines. let me know what you need and I will email them over to you.

What I kind offer. I am getting to the stage though that we will buy BRAD. I keep sending staff to the library every week, which though it is close buy does waste a lot of time.

BRAD also gives a lot more detail but I will research Hollis before I buy.

The new edition of Hollis is now available and contains 25,000 editorial contacts

To order your copy/ies of the Hollis Media Guide, simply e-mail alex@hollis-pr.com with your delivery details. Please enter ref HMG4 in the subject line. We will then send you your copy of the 4th edition together with an invoice for £125.

Keep in mind that journalists change contact details VERY regularly. And for the time spent up keeping a press database, establishing a new list for each press release to capture relevant vertical press, and getting access to ALL press in your sector (including freelancers), it's often more efficient to outsource.

Incoming plug.... our database contains 80,000 media contacts, it's updated daily, we target lists for you and send releases out on your behalf. We syndicate them online (to Google News, Yahoo! News etc) and they appear in a number of search engines.

Hi there,

Just a thought... when i do media training courses (yes I am unleashed on people), the question of targetting media always comes up.

If you are a large company that is looking for lateral PR opportunites across different sectors/media then maybe you will have the money for buying or subscribing to a media database like, Romeike's mediadisk, but... if you are a small operator just looking for regional journo's or a few magazines to target then I would recommend simply reading the papers you want to get in and drawing our the names of the journo's who are writing similar stories to the one you have.

Then, usually the website will give you the newsdesk number and a generic newsdesk email address and you can go from there. Unless you get to know a journo quite well then it is unlikely you will get their direct email address.

Also, one thing to consider before you buy media database services, most of them for regionals (especially smaller ones) only carry the generic email address and number so you are paying for something you could have got yourself in a few minutes and for the cost of a local paper.
