View Full Version : So how long on average for your first order?

Hi all,

Well I've been lurking here a while, but decided to take the plunge and join up!

I was wondering what is the average time to expect an order from a new e-commerce site?

I launched my site a week ago, but no orders yet. It's doing well in the search engines, it's even no 1 result on google for one of my preferred search terms, and traffic is increasing nicely each day so I'm hopeful it's just a matter of being patient. (I'll give it another few weeks before I decide to do a complete redesign!)

So how long did you have to wait before you saw your first order?

It all depends - what are you selling? Is it something small, cheap and very popular? Or very expensive luxury items that will sell infrequently?

And how much traffic are you getting per day?

The product is not expensive - but it is very new, so I expect that there is a certain amount of education involved, and that visitors may take some time to research the product before deciding to buy.

I'm starting advertising next week which will hopefully bring more targetted visitors.

I'm not overly concerned yet, was more curious what other people's experiences are.

I would expect any new sites of mine to start selling from day 1, unless they were very niche products. But then I would be throwing traffic at it with PPC ads straight away.

As I said it all depends on the product.

It may be worth you submitting your site to the review section and letting us all have a look.

We should be able to tell you straight away if there is a problem with the site, and once we see the product we may be able to suggest how well they should be selling. It's best to get a few 2nd opinions from seasoned e-tailers before you start spending too much on ppc's. There's no point driving paid traffic to your site if there are major issues with it. (ps. not suggesting there are, but it's worth doing just to be sure)

I think on this forum you may have to be a paying member to get access to the review forum?

But there are similar forums out there that don't charge for the review section.

I think it all depends on the product you're selling & what type of traffic you're getting. You say you're getting good rankings for one of your key phrases. What is the key phrase & what do you sell?

A couple of orders straight away via the mailing list that I had been building up prior to the launch, then one via google organic search term about 2 weeks later, then several more via PPC. Sales started to become regular after 6 months and really took off a year later.

Thanks all for sharing. My products are selling well offline through word of mouth now. However it is a very new product, and I'm in a small market (selling only in Ireland) so I think it will take time to build up enough traffic to get the conversions.

If the product is selling by word of mouth offline you can try and replicate that online, if the product is new and interesting then it would be perfect for a social media release/press release. You could approach a few bloggers and offer them some product for review or for free. Find relevant forums where people that would use your product hand and and join the conversation with permission from the mods and without being seen as a spammer.

Although the traffic is increasing and you are doing well in the search engines, there are other factors, like correct keywords, proffessional website (including the description, pictures and so on). Correct keywords decide who are your customers; poffessional website decides if the customers have interests in your site or make orders. The previous one is easy to confirm, but the last one needs large time to study it. The two factors are the mainy ones to attract customers. Hope this suggestion useful for you.
