Grid View or List View?

Just wondering if anyone's got any previous experience in which performs better on an e-commerce site, list view or grid view for products? I know that the option to change between the two would be great for customers but in my case its not possible. So which do you guys prefer?

I think you should explain the difference, with pictures if possible, because I've heard grids called lists and lists called grids, and I can't tell the difference. To me, an Excel spreadsheet could be called either a listview or a grid.

list view is usually better, you dont want to put too much on one page, and personaly i like to scroll down to see next image, rather than have too many to choose from on one row
