If you do good work for someone they will tell other people to use you when the conversation of graphic design pops up. I think a lot, if not all, successful small-businesses will tell you they get a lot of business from word of mouth. If you are to get a steady stream of business you need to focus on this, never let a customer down always under promise and over deliver. As I said be exceptional and your clients will refer you to other businesses and the ball with roll :D

For regular customers (i.e. repeat business) you have to demonstrate that you are on their wavelength and that it is therefore easier to do business with you than with someone else. This means you need to develop a good understanding of how they work, their area of business, and their needs. It may therefore be in your interests to try to specialise in specific business areas that you understand well. Graphic design covers many fields, possibly too many.
