Your bank is probably a good place to start.
But what specifically would you like to know?

Are these shares in the stock market so to speak or from a private business?

Knowing the mechanics of buying and selling shares is one thing; knowing which shares to buy and sell is quite another.
My advice is to invest time before investing money. Learn the principles of investing - how to identify a good company, what is important in a company's results, the relative riskiness of a company (e.g., its beta factor), and so on. Then, test the waters and build confidence in your ability to invest in stock.
