Hi Alex,
A good idea is to list all of the must-have features you want your shop to have, i.e. comprehensive search page, customer accounts, built-in newsletter feature etc and then see which of the Ecommerce solutions fit the bill.
Open source is a great choice if you are happy to get your hands dirty with customisation and coding - I've heard Zencart is one of the best open source products at the moment.
If you prefer focusing on running your business rather than tinkering around with open source, perhaps a hosted Ecommerce solution (http://www.internetretailer.biz) such as our own, Open Mind (http://www.openmindcommerce.co.uk) Commerce or a managed solution such as Paul's AWebApart (http://www.awebapart.com) might be a good choice.
As always, if you have a bucket of money that you absolutely must spend then it might be worth having a custom online shop created for you by a web design agency.

The system you use is the same as the one that 123 use. If you have a look at my site geckorouge. com you will see that its the same system but different template. I have worked out how to get it indexed by google - every product i have put for example Birthday Cake - Original Cross Stitch kit. That way every product i have listed says Cross stitch kit in the title. So that now when someone types birthday cake cross stitch kit my one comes up to the top of the search out of 76,500 listings. Still I have goodish search rankings and have a pagerank of 2 and my site is only 4 months old. my trouble is converting them in to sales
