Hi
I have a really strange problem

Friday lunchtime i updated all my dns on 8 domains to point to my new server.

The new server was accessable to me through the domains about 6 hours after that.
except my main webpage wormcity

I use tiscali as my ISP - and therefore until my domain propagates properly i cant pick up emails properly, or place orders, as they would all go into the old database.

when i do a proxy surf (change ip etc) I can view the new server.
but when using my assisgned ip from tiscali I can't

I have deleted all the cache, history on my computer, and even tried my old laptop, through wireless, and I still see the old pages from the old host.

I know that DNS can take 48 hours to go through, but I have never experienced this delay before.
especially with tiscalli being so big, they must update their dns regulary.

All new orders are going into the new database, and emails are going through the new server.
So everybody can see the new pages on the server except me !!

Can anyone give any advice, or is it a case of sitting it out.
Whois gives the address of the servers correctly (and has done since friday 4pm), so the information is there.

Is anyone else on tiscali here ?

the way to see the new pages from old is
there is a line after
soil -
plants -

in the orange box

where the new server doesnt have the line

totally flummoxed

Sounds like Tiscali are caching the old DNS. The TTL on your records are currently 4 hrs, was that the same on the old ones?

Things that might help:

A hard browser refresh - CTRL + F5

Flush the Windows DNS cache - 'ipconfig /flushdns' at a Command Prompt

Change your DNS servers to OpenDNS, Network>Properties>TCP/IP>Properties

sorry I don't even know what that sentence means :|

done the cache flush - still no difference

i know its a tiscali problem, because ive just booted up my old laptop (last used oct), and thats showing the wrong page through the wireless

will tiscali ever update the cache correctly, or will this problem always be there

but i will try the opendns

thanks for helping

TTL = Time to Live

In round terms it works like this:

You ask Tiscali's DNS server where www.wormcity.co.uk is and if it doesn't know it asks the internet's root nameservers who is the authoritative nameserver for that domain.

With that answer, Tiscali DNS then asks your nameservers where www.wormcity.co.uk is and gets the answer. Part of that answer is the TTL, which in your case is 14,320 seconds, about 4 hrs. Tiscali DNS then caches that answer, ie stores it for future reference.

If Tiscali DNS gets asked the same question again, it re-uses the answer from the cache (to save going back and asking your nameservers again), but it should only re-use the answer until the TTL expires.

Where it can go wrong is if the caching nameserver ignores the TTL. Windows PC's do this, caching DNS for 24hrs or the next reboot, irrespective of the TTL, and some internet DNS servers do also, though they should not.

This is why the advice "allow 48 hrs for propagation" is often given.

Is it a Tiscali business account you have? We changed from them 2 years ago cause they never had a clue what they were talking about. Switched to O2 broadband and never looked back.

very annoying now, dns was showing the correct server this morning,
just placed an order through the website, and its gone into the old database, not the correct one,
and my site (for me a least) is showing the old pages
its over 3 days now - so the propagation should be complete, and it still isn't !!

yes its tiscali business, I only took it out originally because I needed a fixed IP address, for the payment terminal - but that didn't work, as it kept loosing packets, and I got so fed up with it, I went back to a normal address.

I keep meaning to change ISPs, but I hear so many horror stories of having no connection for weeks on end whilst the changeover takes place, that im loathe to do it. When its so vital we have broadband.

why don't you stay on tiscali but use openDNS's DNS resolvers.

They have instructions on how to configure your machine(s) depending on your platform.

My advice is to change to another service, I don't think Tiscali will be around for long.

yeah but who ???

so many companies, all tied into 12-18 month contracts

and they all seem to be as bad as one another......

I can vouch for o2 business broadband.
