Hi
We may have taken a dodgy card last month. (through the website) We checked address was legit and it is normal that shop keepers send goods to a shop rather than home so no alarm bells rang. We spoke to the customer and the card passed the usual 4 checks for postcode etc through Protx. We do not use Verified by Visa.
BUT this week the same delivery address was used with a second and a third card that were declined and then a fourth card which was accepted . All had different cardholders details. We have voided the latest transaction and are waiting to see if anyone phones us. How does it work if the first transaction was fraud? do we just wait and see? and how long normally does it take to hear? Is it possible that it will not be charged back even if it was fraud?
Thanks

If it's a shop then can't you do some detective work and find out what's going on? It should be pretty easy to verify if a shop - presumably a toy shop - is genuine.

You usually find out about chargebacks when the real cardholder receives their statement and makes a complaint which can be 1-2 months later.

What you should do is call your acquiring bank. The details you will need is the date, time, value, and authcode for the transaction. Tell them you suspect it is fraud and can they request the issuer verify the transaction with the card holder. If it is bad you will lose the money unfortunately but if its charged back you will anyways.

What this will do is a couple of things. The cardholder may not be aware that their card details are compromised so the card can be stopped. It also show the bank you are on top of things so if chargebacks do become a problem you look to be practive and not reactive.

Hope that helps.

We had one fraud attempt soe years back, and once we had decided (like you) that the original trasactions was probably a fraid too, we contact the acquiring bank - it turned out that we were correct, however because we had bee pro-active, we were not 'fined' with the chargeback fee - we lost the good yes, but the chargeback fee adds insult to injury - it wasn't our fault!

Get VBV and SecuredByMastercard - it is worth putting in place - it costs you nothing, gives your customers peace of mind, and you protecton against this type of fraud.

Do you have the CVV check on Protx? We got a very large chargeback last year because the CVV number wasn't put in when the fraudsters purchased and for that reason alone we had to pay up.

Annoying thing is we had to pay back but our products are useless and not resaleable as we have a service that activates the product - otherwise it doesn't work. So they bought a load of kit that doesn't work but i guess they didn't care about that - it wasn't their money!

Interestingly, we managed to contact one card holder before we sent the goods out who stated she hadn't ordered but her card was one of the ones stolen from TK Maxx when they had that massive security breach.

Now we set up a fraud rule to discard all transactions that don't have the correct CVV. Also after speaking to our merchant who was useless actually (damn barclays...) But they do now give me a monthly Bin list. What this does is give the details of every card out there in excel format so we can search the first digits of a card, and it will tell us what bank it's with and other details so if we're not sure they we can ask little questions to see if they have the card on them or just the number.

HI
Thanks for replys.
I wrote to the "real" customer and asked if they would phone to confirm the transaction. They did and they knew nothing about it. I have today spoken to the card company and they will look into the other transaction and get back to us.
