Were putting money aside from our ebay sales to get a shop done properly, at the moment we use Shopify.com as our hosted cart but i dont think it offers us the flexibility we desire.

What we will want:
- Open source cart (ive followed magento from early beta and i like what it can do but do worry about its being a bit slooow)

- Custom template design

- Custom account module (this would be a module that adds the functionality to have members add their own custom products which they can sell and make money from)

Anyone know how much this is going to run for? So i can start saving my pennies. :p

Everyones going to tell you that they don't know and that it's variable, and then everyone is going to tell you that they offer the service

anyway, I reckon you can do it for £500 no probs

Most off the shelf ecommerce systems are B2C (business to consumer) systems, that is one business selling to many consumers. What you are asking for is a C2C (consumer to consumer) system, which is a whole new ball game. An example of a C2C system is ebay. I doubt that it will be as simple as adding a module to an existing B2C system like magento (http://www.magentocommerce.com/boards/viewthread/3122/), so out of your requirements, your C2C requirement will be the one that hikes up the complexity and cost of the system.

Hey,

Thanks for the info.

I don't want it to be as detailed as a c2c, more that the system counts the total sales each month for an item who's manufacturer is "dave" then reports out to us to pay the commisions.

Everything else would be done by hand, they would email us the pictures to list etc.

Thanks

 Go on then, let's see what you can produce for £500.
Did you even read the (very basic) brief?

Hi,

On the basis you're upscaling to a dedicated online shop, my best advice would be to choose a commercial e-commerce product implemented by a company who has the ability to design, customise, host and support the system.

Assuming the company requires a full design for the shop and supporting website, you should budget around £15K - £20K (including hosting for the first year)

Although it may be possible to set this up for a couple of hundred pounds using shared hosting and whatever free or open-source e-commerce package is supplied with that, you wont get the custom high-end design and hosting service you need for a serious commercial e-commerce system. These systems do have their place and people will say so, but you want to ensure you have the SLA's to suit your business.

Please PM me with your requirements for more information on our services.

Hope this helps.

I think a realistic minimum for the custom design would be around the £1.5k mark

it depends a lot on how custom you want it to be... if you want something that is totally unique and the designer has to work from scratch then expect to pay a lot more.

your other questions are more about development

depending on the final spec your customer products system could be really quite complex and I would estimate single figure £thousands

Again, i appreciate all the info. I guess i will need to sit down and decide exacltly what we need, and and what we want. For example it would not be a deal breaker if the c2c side of things didnt come in straight away, as long as the scope is there to add it at a later date.

I feel we can offer you what you want at a fair price, as a company who's primary aim is the smaller company, we have designed our company infrastructure to keep costs low.

Even if payments are not made direct from the customer to the product owner, as in the case of ebay, the system is still classed as C2C if the site owner accepts the payment then passes on money, e.g. zazzle.com, cafepress.com, and it is still classed as C2C even if there is no ecommerce selling, as in Loot. C2C is more about who is uploading the products/content, if you want your product owners to upload and maintain their own products and content then it is C2C. In this respect, a forum or a directory is C2C too, since content is not just managed by the site owner. If you are quite happy to upload all the products then you can use a B2C system, since the other people selling products on your site are really just your suppliers - unless it is them who also fulfil the order, send it out, deal with returns, etc, in which case it gets complicated again!

You mentioned pictures. If the products are pictures (e.g. photographs), and you want C2C, then you might have more luck not going with a B2C ecommerce system, but going for a C2C photo gallery system that also has an ecommerce module, e.g. coppermine (http://coppermine-gallery.net/)

Thanks,

It will be slightly different to the ones mentioned, in a simiar theme to cafepress etc except customers will have no direct access to listing, changing products etc. Their designs come to use, we add to template and list. The idea is that at the end of the month it totals up their sales and adds the ammount to their account, they can then chose to cash it out etc.
