you are a leader?

Not a leader in anything in particular, but just a leader in general. As in a brand leader of a certain market, but not necessarily in terms of market share.

You back it up with evidence.

In my opinion, it's important to establish yourself (or the owner of the business) as the opinion leader in your industry. Get yourself quoted, hand out free information, build a strong online presence. Sometimes you have to make 'the person behind the brand' a leader, and then in turn, push for awareness of the brand itself through copywriting, design and establishing clear, specific brand guidelines.

You can also be a leader via a completely emotive and intangible perception of your brand. In fact quite a number of brands are considered to be 'leaders' precisely on this point, so showing evidence is not the definitive answer. As PayAsYouGoPR_J2 mentioned, strength of presence is a big factor. Getting to be a brand leader is a bit like standing in the middle of the M25 and wondering which junction to join though; none of them are necessarily the wrong one, but some are more attractive than others.
